Solid-state NMR (ssNMR) spectroscopy facilitates the non-destructive characterization of structurally heterogeneous biomolecules in their native setting, for example, comprising proteins, lipids and polysaccharides. Here we demonstrate the utility of high and ultra-high field H-detected fast MAS ssNMR spectroscopy, which exhibits increased sensitivity and spectral resolution, to further elucidate the atomic-level composition and structural arrangement of the cell wall of Schizophyllum commune, a mushroom-forming fungus from the Basidiomycota phylum. These advancements allowed us to reveal that Cu(II) ions and the antifungal peptide Cathelicidin-2 mainly bind to cell wall proteins at low concentrations while glucans are targeted at high metal ion concentrations. In addition, our data suggest the presence of polysaccharides containing N-acetyl galactosamine (GalNAc) and proteins, including the hydrophobin proteins SC3, shedding more light on the molecular make-up of cells wall as well as the positioning of the polypeptide layer. Obtaining such information may be of critical relevance for future research into fungi in material science and biomedical contexts.

Amphiphilic copolymers of comb-like poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methacrylate) (PPEGMA) with methyl methacrylate (MMA) synthesized by one-pot atom transfer radical polymerization were mixed with lithium bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide salt to formulate dry solid polymer electrolytes (DSPE) for semisolid-state Li-ion battery applications. The PEO-type side chain length (EO monomer's number) in the PEGMA macromonomer units was varied, and its influence on the mechanical and electrochemical characteristics was investigated. It was found that the copolymers, due to the presence of PMMA segments, possess viscoelastic behavior and less change in mechanical properties than a PEO homopolymer with 100 kDa molecular weight in the investigated temperature range.

The present study reports the ability of a fungal isolate DY1, obtained from rotten wood, to degrade alkali lignin (AL) and lignocelluloses in an efficient manner. The efficiency of degradation was monitored by measuring the percentage of decolorization and utilizing GC-MS for identifying degradation products at different time intervals (10, 20, 30, and 40 days). The optimal degradation of alkali lignin (AL) was achieved at 0.

Department of Chemistry, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 170 Albany Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139, United States.

The SARS-CoV-2 E protein conducts cations across the cell membrane to cause pathogenicity to infected cells. The high-resolution structures of the E transmembrane domain (ETM) in the closed state at neutral pH and in the open state at acidic pH have been determined. However, the ion conduction mechanism remains elusive.

Manipulating Toughness and Microstructure in Polyelectrolyte Complex Hydrogels with Competitive Surfactant Micelles.

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Functional Polymer Materials of Ministry of Education and College of Chemistry, Nankai University, Tianjin 300071, China.

Polyelectrolyte complex (PEC) hydrogels provide a promising strategy to develop a class of physically cross-linked networks characterized by exceptional toughness and self-healing properties. However, the precise control of the microstructure and the enhancement of mechanical properties still pose challenges in the field of PEC hydrogels. Herein, we propose a strategy to manipulate the structure of PEC with competitively charged surfactant micelles, leveraging the spatially confined surface charge and excluded volume effects to overcome coacervation issues associated with the PEC, thus achieving a simple one-step preparation of macroscopically uniform and tough PEC hydrogels.

December 2024

Sanya Institute of Nanjing Agricultural University, Department of Microbiology, Key Lab of Microbiological Engineering of Agricultural Environment, Ministry of Agriculture, College of Life Sciences, Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing 210095, PR China. Electronic address:

High production cost of cellulases limits its commercial application on lignocellulose. Solid-state fermentation (SSF) has special advantages of water and energy conservation, however, the lack of free water and water loss during fermentation limits its application. In this paper, a constructed water-supply SSF was used to improve carboxymethyl cellulose activity and filter paper activity of 1.
