Fifty clinically indicated vacuum extractions were studied to evaluate a possible relationship between neurobehavioral abnormality, retinal hemorrhages and the tractive force used for delivery. A Vacuum Extractor Recorder (Type SF 30, Knick), was used to measure the forces necessary for delivery of the head. Infants delivered by the use of extensive tractive force showed no greater incidence of neuropathology than those delivered with less tractive force. The retinal hemorrhages were equally distributed among the infants, irrespective of the tractive force applied or the neurobehavioral assessment. The implication is that retinal hemorrhages cannot be used to evaluate the extent of cerebral influence after birth and that the main cause of neurobehavioral abnormality is the condition leading to the use of the vacuum extractor (VE).

Purpose: This work developed a novel preclinical test of total knee replacements (TKRs) in order to explain TKR instability linked to patient dissatisfaction. It was hypothesized that stability tests on the isolated moving prostheses would provide novel comparative data on the stability and kinematics among TKR designs.
Methods: Three TKR designs, DePuy Synthes Attune MS, Stryker Triathlon and Zimmer Biomet Persona MC, were assessed using a robotic arm while flexing-extending 0-140°.

In mining machines with friction discs, but also in multi-rope traction elevators, it is necessary to distribute the applied tensile load, generated by the weight of the cage and counterweight, evenly in all cross-sections of the load-bearing ropes. Hydraulic devices used for this purpose can operate on the principle of Pascal's law. This article presents a structural design, a 3D model and an implemented solution of a laboratory device capable of simulating a practical method of evenly distributing the total weight of the load into partial tensile forces of the same size acting on a selected number of load-bearing ropes.

Trafficability gives tracked vehicles adaptability, stability, and propulsion for various purposes, including deep-sea research in rough terrain. Terrain characteristics affect tracked vehicle mobility. This paper investigates the soil mechanical interaction dynamics between rubber-tracked vehicles and sedimental soils through controlled laboratory-simulated experiments.

Dynamic orthoses have a significant effect on the treatment of elbow capsular contracture. Because of the lack of quantitative research on traction forces, determining the appropriate traction force to help stretch soft tissues and maintain the joint's range of motion is a challenge in the rehabilitation process. We developed a human elbow finite element (FE) model incorporating the activity behavior of the muscles and considering different capsular contracture locations, including total, anterior and posterior capsular contractures, to analyze the internal biomechanical responses of different capsular contracture models during flexion (30 to 80 degrees).

Background/purpose: Oral biofilms are highly structured bacterial colonies embedded in a highly hydrated extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) matrix. This study aimed to investigate the characteristics of oral biofilm at different stages of maturation.
Materials And Methods: Oral multispecies biofilms were grown anaerobically from plaque bacteria on collagen coated hydroxyapatite discs in brain heart infusion broth for one and three weeks.
