AI Article Synopsis

  • Understanding the changes in phytoplankton communities is crucial for managing shallow lakes effectively.
  • The study analyzed three eutrophic lakes over ten years, revealing notable shifts in algal composition, particularly in diatoms and cyanobacteria.
  • Key factors influencing these changes included nutrient concentrations (total nitrogen, nitrate, and orthophosphate) and meteorological conditions like wind speed and precipitation, highlighting the need for coordinated nutrient management in the Taoge water system.

Article Abstract

Gaining a deeper understanding of factors that influence changes in phytoplankton community has significant implications for shallow lake management. The present study examined changes in the algae community of three shallow eutrophic lakes of the Taoge water system between 2008 and 2018 and the related factors influencing these changes. The composition of the algal community varied significantly during this period with the relative diatom biomass in lakes Changdanghu and Gehu increasing between 2014 and 2016 and again decreasing after 2017. However, relative cyanobacteria biomass initially decreased and later increased; meanwhile, the proportion of biomass of other phyla decreased continuously in the study period. Lake Zhushanhu showed similar trends, although it eventually returned to its initial state with absolute Microcystis dominance. Furthermore, the analysis of driving factors revealed that the concentrations of total nitrogen (TN), nitrate (NO), and orthophosphate (PO) were significantly associated with a significant increase in Microcystis biomass. Meteorological conditions also influenced changes in total algal and diatom biomasses, which were inversely related to the daily mean and daily maximum wind speeds. Monthly cumulative precipitation was only significantly associated with diatom biomass. Meanwhile, rainfall primarily affected the algal community structure between 2013 and 2017; an increase in the relative biomass of diatoms coincided with increased precipitation. Coordinating nitrogen and phosphorous use within the Taoge water system should improve lake habitat management; a broader perspective in attempts to control global and regional climate change may be needed.

Rumen Bacterial Community Responses to Three DHA Supplements: A Comparative In Vitro Study.

Animals (Basel)

January 2025

Department of Nutrition and Health, China Agricultural University, No. 17 Tsinghua East Road, Haidian District, Beijing 100083, China.

The aim of this study was to investigate the loss of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from three supplements (two powders and one oil) after digestion (rumen and gastrointestinal) and their effects on the number and composition of rumen bacteria, using an in vitro approach. The concentration of supplements has a significant impact on the DHA loss rate and algal oil exhibited the highest rate of loss, but bioaccessibility was not significantly different from the other supplements. 16S rRNA sequencing showed that three DHA supplements altered the bacterial composition of in vitro batch cultures inoculated with rumen microorganisms from cows, and caused changes in the relative abundance of important bacterial phyla, families, and genera.

, known as a global red tide species, is a common red tide species found in Pingtan Island. To examine the bacterial community structure in different environments during the red tide period of on Pingtan Island, samples were collected from the Algal Bloom Area (ABA), Transition Area (TA), and Non-Algal Bloom Area (NBA) on 6 April 2022, and the environmental physicochemical factors and bacterial community were determined. The outbreak of red tide significantly impacted the water quality and bacterial community structure in the affected sea area.

Cyanobacterial blooms, driven by nutrient loading and temperature, pose significant ecological and economic challenges. This study employs a combined data-driven and trait-based modelling approach to predict changes in cyanobacterial communities in a mono- and a polydominant shallow temperate lakes under varying temperature and nutrient scenarios. Results of the AQUATOX simulation model for two aquatic systems suggest that a 2 °C temperature increase, consistent with Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's predictions, may influence cyanobacteria species composition and dominance, with trends indicating a possible shift favouring Nostocales over Oscillatoriales and Chroococcales.

Evaluating the tolerance of harmful algal bloom communities to copper.

Environ Pollut

School of Fisheries, Aquaculture, and Aquatic Sciences, Auburn University, Auburn, AL. Electronic address:

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) cause severe economic and environmental impacts, including hypoxic events and the production of toxins and off-flavor compounds. Chemical treatments, such as copper sulfate pentahydrate (CuSO·5HO), are often used to mitigate the damaging effects of algal blooms. However, treatment effects are usually short-lived leading to waterbodies requiring repeated CuSO·5HO applications to control persistent algal blooms, particularly in highly eutrophic systems, such as aquaculture ponds or small agricultural impoundments.
