The mobility of biochar in saturated quartz sand under a direct current (DC) electric field was investigated by column transport test. The effects of biochar preparation temperature (350 and 550 °C), solution chemistry (pH of 4, 7, and 10, and ion strength of 1, 10, 100 mM) and voltage gradient (0, 0.5 and 1.0 V cm) on the mobility of biochar were explored. It was found that DC electric field could significantly promote the migration of biochar, and the recovery rate of particles could be improved by 0.5-6.1 folds under 0.5 V cm. Higher voltage potential, solution pH and ionic strength were more favorable for biochar migration. The transport of biochar could be well interpreted by deterministic nonequilibrium convection-dispersion equation model. The enhanced mobility caused by DC electric field was attributed to the following reasons: enhanced electromigration following electrostatic attraction from the anode; increasing surface negative charges and functional groups on biochar surface as a result of electrochemical oxidization; reducing size blocking of biochar particles by decreasing particle size. Moreover, the interaction between biochar particles and electrode could alter solution chemistry, in particular, increasing solution pH, which in turn facilitated the transport of biochar. This study provided a perspective to modulate the transport behavior of biochar particle in the soil for the remediation of polluted sites.

Correlation of Phase Structure, Defect Relaxation, and Microwave Dielectric Properties in Low-Loss MgTiO Ceramic Systems.

Low-loss microwave dielectrics are of significant importance for the miniaturization and integration of microwave devices. In this paper, the ceramics of nominal composition MgTiO ( = 3-6) are synthesized, and the correlations among their phase compositions, defect behaviors, and microwave dielectric properties are systematically investigated. The analyses indicate that the MgTiO ceramics are a biphasic system consisting of hexagonal ilmenite-structured MgTiO and cubic spinel-structured MgTiO.

The present article deals with the modulation of oscillatory electroosmotic flow (EOF) and solute dispersion across a nanochannel filled with an electrolyte solution surrounded by a layer of a dielectric liquid. The dielectric permittivity of the liquid layer adjacent to supporting rigid walls is taken to be lower than that of the electrolyte solution. Besides, the aforesaid liquid layer may bear additional mobile charges, , free lipid molecules, charged surfactant molecules , which in turn lead to a nonzero charge along the liquid-liquid interface.

Reconstruction of reverberant sound fields over large spatial domains.

Characterising acoustic fields in rooms is challenging due to the complexity of data acquisition. Sound field reconstruction methods aim at predicting the acoustic quantities at positions where no data are available, incorporating generalisable physical priors of the sound in a room. This study introduces a model that exploits the general time structure of the room impulse response, where a wave-based expansion addresses the direct sound and early reflections, localising their apparent origin, and kernel methods are applied to the late part.

Electrically Switching Ferroelectric Order in 3R-MoS Layers.

Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) with rhombohedral (3R) stacking order are excellent platforms to realize multiferroelectricity. In this work, we demonstrate the electrical switching of ferroelectric orders in bilayer, trilayer, and tetralayer 3R-MoS dual-gate devices by examining their reflection and photoluminescence (PL) responses under sweeping out-of-plane electric fields. We observe sharp shifts in excitonic spectra at different critical fields with pronounced hysteresis.

Spiking neural networks seek to emulate biological computation through interconnected artificial neuron and synapse devices. Spintronic neurons can leverage magnetization physics to mimic biological neuron functions, such as integration tied to magnetic domain wall (DW) propagation in a patterned nanotrack and firing tied to the resistance change of a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ), captured in the domain wall-magnetic tunnel junction (DW-MTJ) device. Leaking, relaxation of a neuron when it is not under stimulation, is also predicted to be implemented based on DW drift as a DW relaxes to a low energy position, but it has not been well explored or demonstrated in device prototypes.
