Aiming at a new type of salt-free CASAIL (Catanionic Surface Active IL) for electrochemical applications or emulsifiers, dispersants, and foaming or antifoaming agents, we combined mesogenic anions (carboxylate) and cations (imidazolium) of similar shape and size to synthesize a series of congruent ion pairs of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium alkylcarboxylates [Cnmim][Cm-1COO] ( = 10-16, = 10-16). With particular focus on alkyl chain length varieties in both, imidazolium cations and carboxylate anions (/), the self-assembly in the bulk phase and in solution was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments and surface tension measurements. Our results revealed that the presence of long alkyl chains on both the cation and anion leads to improved thermal stability of the bulk material while maintaining broad lamellar (SmA) mesophases. In water, we observed a strong and linear decrease of log(cmc) for increasing both the carboxylate anion and imidazolium cation chain length due to the increasing hydrophobic effect. Surprisingly, for both thermotropic behavior and micellization, the chain length of the carboxylate anion had a stronger impact than the chain length of the imidazolium cation, indicating its greater surface activity and tendency to form micelles.

Mixtures of multiple surfactants that have superior performance to the individual components are highly sought-after commercially. Mixtures with a reduced Krafft point () are particularly useful as they enable applications at lower temperatures. Such an example is the soap maker's eutectic: the mixture of sodium laurate (NaL) and sodium oleate (NaOl).

The fungi have traditionally been used in Asia for food coloring. Unfortunately, the most well-known species, , very often produce mycotoxin citrinin in addition to pigments, which poses a significant problem for the use of pigments in foods. There is a step in pigment biosynthesis where a side chain of five or seven carbons is attached to the tetraketide, the product of polyketide synthase, resulting in the formation of pigments in pairs.

Understanding the interplay between the molecular structure of the ionic liquid (IL) subunit, the resulting nanostructure and ion transport in polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) is necessary for the realization of high-performance solid-state electrolytes required in various advanced applications. Herein, we present a detailed structural characterization of a recently synthesized series of acrylate-based PIL homopolymers and networks with imidazolium cations and chloride anions with varying alkyl spacer and terminal group lengths designed for organic solid-state batteries based on X-ray scattering. The impact of the concentrations of both the crosslinker and added tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBACl) conducting salt on the structural characteristics is also investigated.

Copy number variations (CNVs) have become widely acknowledged as a significant source of genomic variability and phenotypic variance. To understand the genetic variants in horses, CNVs from six Indian horse breeds, Manipuri, Zanskari, Bhutia, Spiti, Kathiawari and Marwari were discovered using Axiom Equine Genotyping Array. These breeds differed in agro-climatic adaptation with distinct phenotypic characters.

The ion binding to the lipid/water interface can substantially influence the structural, functional, and dynamic properties of the cell membrane. Despite extensive research on ion-lipid interactions, the specific effects of ion binding on the polarity and hydration at the lipid/water interface remain poorly understood. This study explores the influence of three biologically relevant divalent cations─Mg, Ca, and Zn─on the depth-dependent interfacial polarity and hydration of zwitterionic DPPC lipid in its gel phase at room temperature.
