The risk of reverse zoonotic transmission to pet animals during the current global monkeypox outbreak, United Kingdom, June to mid-September 2022.

Euro Surveill

One Health/Animal and Zoonotic Viral Diseases Portfolio, Animal and Plant Health Authority, Addlestone, Surrey, United Kingdom.

Published: September 2022

We report results of surveillance between June and mid-September 2022 of pet animals living in households of confirmed human monkeypox (MPX) cases. Since surveillance commenced, 154 animals from 40 households with a confirmed human MPX case were reported to the United Kingdom Animal and Plant Health Agency. No animals with clinical signs of MPX were identified. While a risk of transmission exists to pets from owners with a confirmed MPX virus infection, we assess this risk to be low.

2-[F]Fluoropropionic Acid PET Imaging of Doxorubicin-Induced Cardiotoxicity.

Mol Imaging Biol

January 2025

Department of Radiology, Weill Cornell Medicine, 413 E 69th Street, Room BB-1604, New York, NY, 10021, USA.

Purpose: Treatment of pediatric cancers with doxorubicin is a common and predictable cause of cardiomyopathy. Early diagnosis of treatment-induced cardiotoxicity and intervention are major determinants for the prevention of advanced disease. The onset of cardiomyopathies is often accompanied by profound changes in lipid metabolism, including an enhanced uptake of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA).

Oral Administration of [F]MC225 for Quantification of P-glycoprotein Function: A Feasibility Study.

Mol Imaging Biol

January 2025

Department of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging, University Medical Center Groningen, University of Groningen, Groningen, The Netherlands.

Purpose: This preclinical study explored the feasibility of assessing P-glycoprotein (P-gp) function in both brain and gastrointestinal (GI) tract of rats using positron emission tomography (PET) following oral administration of [F]MC225. Different oral administration protocols were evaluated, and radioactivity uptake was compared with uptake following intravenous administration.

Procedures: Twelve male Wistar rats were divided into four groups and subjected to intravenous or oral [F]MC225 administration protocols: G (intravenous route), G (oral administration without fasting), G (oral administration with fasting), and G (oral administration with fasting following administration of the P-gp inhibitor tariquidar).

Detection of SARS-CoV-2 and a possible variant in shelter cats.

PLoS One

January 2025

Arizona Humane Society, Phoenix, Arizona, United States of America.

SARS-CoV-2 is the cause of mild to severe acute respiratory disease that led to significant loss of human lives worldwide between 2019 and 2022. The virus has been detected in various animals including cats and dogs making it a major public health concern and a One Health issue. In this study, conjunctival and pharyngeal swabs (n = 350) and serum samples (n = 350) were collected between July and December 2020 from cats that were housed in an animal shelter and tested for the infection of SARS-CoV-2 using real time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) that targeted the N1 and N2 genes, and a SARS-CoV-2 surrogate virus neutralization Test (sVNT), respectively.

Antibiotic use (ABU) in animals is postulated to be a major contributor to selection of antibiotic resistance (ABR) which subsequently causes infections in human populations. However, there are few quantifications of the size of this association. Denmark, as a country with high levels of pig production and strong ABR surveillance data, is an ideal case study for exploring this association.
