Platinum(IV)-Backboned Polymer Prodrug-Functionalized Manganese Oxide Nanoparticles for Enhanced Lung Cancer Chemoimmunotherapy via Amplifying Stimulator of Interferon Genes Activation.

ACS Nano

January 2025

Institute of Respiratory Health, Frontiers Science Center for Disease-related Molecular Network, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu 610041, P. R. China.

The stimulator of interferon genes (STING) pathway exhibits great potential in remodeling the immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment and initiating antitumor immunity. However, how to effectively activate STING and avoid undesired toxicity after systemic administration remains challenging. Herein, platinum(IV)-backboned polymer prodrug-coated manganese oxide nanoparticles (DHP/MnONP) with pH/redox dual responsive properties are developed to precisely release cisplatin and Mn in the tumor microenvironment and synergistically amplify STING activation.

Harnessing the Power of Our Immune System: The Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Properties of Nitric Oxide.

Microorganisms

December 2024

Advanced Wound Care Research & Development, Convatec, Deeside Industrial Park, Deeside CH5 2NU, UK.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a free radical of the human innate immune response to invading pathogens. NO, produced by nitric oxide synthases (NOSs), is used by the immune system to kill microorganisms encapsulated within phagosomes via protein and DNA disruption. Owing to its ability to disperse biofilm-bound microorganisms, penetrate the biofilm matrix, and act as a signal molecule, NO may also be effective as an antibiofilm agent.

Cationic Micelle-like Nanoparticles as the Carrier of Methotrexate for Glioblastoma Treatment.

Molecules

December 2024

Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Arts and Science, Necmettin Erbakan University, Konya 42090, Turkey.

In the present study, ultra-small, magnetic, oleyl amine-coated FeO nanoparticles were synthesized and stabilized with a cationic ligand, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, and an anticancer drug, methotrexate, was incorporated into a micelle-like nanoparticle structure for glioblastoma treatment. Nanoparticles were further characterized for their physicochemical properties using spectroscopic methods. Drug incorporation efficiency, drug loading, and drug release profile of the nanoparticles were investigated.

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic relapsing-remitting and potentially progressive form of inflammatory bowel disease in which there is extensive inflammation and mucosal damage in the colon and rectum as a result of an abnormal immune response. MV130 is a mucosal-trained immunity-based vaccine used to prevent respiratory tract infections in various clinical settings. Additionally, MV130 may induce innate immune cells that acquire anti-inflammatory properties and promote tolerance, which could have important implications for chronic inflammatory diseases such as ulcerative colitis.
