A literature review of surgical techniques used for resection of periocular tumors with conservation of the eyelid is accompanied by a report of the author's personal experience with blepharoplasty in cattle. Included are 13 cases of Fleckvieh cows with squamous cell carcinoma. Five animals were without tumor recurrence after an average time of 10.7 months, while seven animals with recurrence of the neoplasm had mean survival time of 10.6 months. Those five cows had been slaughtered for unrelated problems, the others because of recurrence of the ocular tumor. One patient was slaughtered five days after surgery because of complications of wound healing.

Purpose: To evaluate matrix metalloprotease-1 (MMP-1), matrix metalloprotease-3 (MMP-3), tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α), and interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels in the eyelid skin and fibroadipose tissue in patients with inactive moderate-to-severe Graves' orbitopathy (GO).

Methods: This prospective study included 23 patients with inactive moderate-to-severe GO who underwent upper blepharoplasty and medial fat excision, and 22 age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. MMP-1, MMP-3, TNF-α, and IL-6 levels in the skin and fibroadipose tissue obtained during surgery were measured using the ELISA method.

Article Synopsis
  • A study was conducted on 37 patients to evaluate a new method for lower eyelid reconstruction using skin flaps to address issues like flap drooping.
  • Patients were divided into two groups; Group A used traditional reconstruction techniques, while Group B employed a novel approach combining a periosteal flap and a de-epithelialized triangular flap.
  • Results showed that Group B had significantly better outcomes in terms of drooping index, canthal tilt, and patient satisfaction compared to Group A, indicating the new method is more effective.
