A simple device to measure the rib hump deformity in scoliosis is described. The importance of defining the plane of measurement rigidly was stressed. The visible rib humps from 30 scoliotic patients were measured in the form of plotted curves by a group of paramedical and medical staffs. Highly reproducible results were obtained. The expected difference between two curves measured on a random patient by a single investigator was .116 cm, and the expected difference between the curves made by two random investigators on the same patient was .167 cm. This instrument is useful in charting the progress of the rib hump deformity in daily clinical practice.

Background: Distinguishing self-limiting ('trivial') from potentially consequential spinal pain in childhood and adolescence is crucial to prevent over- or under-medicalization. The aim of this study was to stratify participants for severity of spinal pain and to investigate associations of pain severity with potential consequences of pain and some psychophysical and clinical factors.

Methods: In 2020 and 2021, children and adolescents took part in a voluntary population-based spine screening event across Switzerland organized by the Swiss Chiropractors Association.

Article Synopsis
  • Razorback deformity with stiff thoracic scoliosis presents a complex challenge that can be addressed through a modified thoracoplasty (MTP) technique, which aims to improve rib hump deformity while minimizing complications.
  • A study involving 44 patients assessed the effectiveness of MTP in combination with posterior spinal fusion (PSF), showing that MTP resulted in better correction of rib hump height and thoracic curve compared to PSF alone, without compromising pulmonary function.
  • The results indicated that the MTP technique enhanced patient self-image post-surgery, making it a beneficial approach in treating stiff thoracic scoliosis.

Purpose: Identification of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients with mild curvatures who pose significant risk of progressing to severe levels of curvatures is of paramount importance for clinical care. This study aimed to compare segmental deformity changes in AIS sub-cohorts that are dichotomised by progression status.

Methods: Thirty-six female participants with Lenke 1 AIS curves were investigated with sequential MRIs during growth.

: Scoliosis, the most prevalent spinal deformity in children, is often associated with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Curves surpassing 50 degrees can deteriorate, especially thoracic curves, leading to pulmonary limitations. Surgical intervention is usually advised for curvatures exceeding 50 degrees to halt further progression.

Article Synopsis
  • - Congenital kyphosis is a spinal deformity caused by improper development of vertebrae during embryonic growth, which can also coincide with other congenital issues like kidney or heart defects due to their shared developmental timeline.
  • - A case study involving a 16-year-old girl with worsening symptoms of congenital kyphoscoliosis demonstrates a successful surgical approach using a posterior-only method, including vertebral column resection and spine reconstruction with a mesh cage.
  • - Timely surgical intervention for congenital anomalies is crucial, as it can prevent further progression of deformity and improve physical alignment, with the case showing significant positive outcomes post-surgery and no serious complications.
