To facilitate the use of Geant4-DNA for radiation transport simulations in micro- and nanodosimeters, which are physically operated with tissue-equivalent gases such as nitrogen (and propane), this work aims to extend the cross section data available in Geant4-DNA to include those of nitrogen for electron energies ranging from 1 MeV down to the ionisation threshold. To achieve this, interaction cross section data for nitrogen that have been used with the in-house PTB PTra track structure code have been implemented in the current state-of-the-art Geant4-DNA simulation toolkit. An intercomparison has been performed between the two codes to validate this implementation. To quantify the agreement between the cross section models for nitrogen adopted in PTra and those implemented in Geant4-DNA, the simulation results of both codes were analysed using three physical parameters describing the ionisation cluster size distribution (ICSD): mean ionisation cluster size, variance of the cluster size and the probability to obtain a single ionisation within the target. Statistical analysis of the results indicates that the interaction cross section models for nitrogen used in PTra (elastic scattering, impact ionisations and electronic excitations) have been successfully implemented in Geant4-DNA. In addition, simulated ICSDs were compared to those measured with the Jet Counter nanodosimeter for energies between 100 and 2000 eV. For greater energies, the ICRP data for LET and particle range were used as a reference. The modified Geant4-DNA code and data successfully passed all these benchmarks fulfilling the requirement for their public release in the next version of the Geant4 toolkit.

During the study of algal diversity in pyroclastic deposits of the Kamchatka Peninsula, Chlorella-like green algae strains VCA-72 and VCA-93 were isolated from samples collected from along the Baydarnaya river bed on the Shiveluch volcano in 2018 and at the outlet of thermal vapors along the edge of the caldera on the southern slope of the Gorely volcano in 2020. Identification of the strains was carried out within the framework of an integrative approach using microscopic and molecular genetic methods, including preliminary taxon identification, obtaining nucleotide sequences of the small subunit and the internal transcribed spacer rRNA, reconstruction of phylogenetic trees and secondary structures of the ITS1 and ITS2 rRNA regions. On the phylogenetic tree, strain VCA-93 was clustered in the Micractinium thermotolerans species clade.

The highly virulent genotype fowl adenovirus 4 (FAdV-4), associated with severe hydropericardium hepatitis syndrome (HHS) in poultry from China, is characterized by a large deletion of 1966 bp (1966-del), including losses of ORF19 and ORF27. However, how this virus originated remains unclear. In this study, a novel FAdV-4 strain, HNU-XXY-2019, from diseased chickens, which has a genome size of 45669 bp and is approximately 1966 bp longer than the known FAdV-4 genome from China, was isolated and characterized.

This study aimed to investigate the performance differences of low-sodium myofibrillar protein (MP) gels substituted by different chloride salt mixtures from the perspective of gelation process. The results revealed that low-sodium MP substituted by KCl/CaCl exhibited higher turbidity and particle size at 40 % substitution, and formed protein aggregates earlier at 53 °C. During the gelation process, KCl/CaCl increased the extent of cross-linking as the substitution level increased from 10 % to 40 %, which was prone to forming final gels with poor palatability.

The branched structure of amylose was probed using concanavalin A (ConA) lectin, which forms precipitable aggregates with highly branched glucans, such as glycogen and amylopectin. Rice (japonica cultivar) amylose was fractionated from de-fatted, gelatinized starch by precipitation with 1-butanol (BuOH) and purified by ultracentrifugation and repeated crystallization. The purified amylose still has short side chains, whose chain-length (CL) distribution resembles that of amylopectin.

Human islets display a high degree of heterogeneity in terms of size, number, architecture, and endocrine cell-type compositions. An ever-increasing number of immunohistochemistry-stained whole slide images (WSIs) are available through the online pathology database of the Network for Pancreatic Organ donors with Diabetes (nPOD) program at the University of Florida (UF). We aimed to develop an enhanced machine learning-assisted WSI analysis workflow to utilize the nPOD resource for analysis of endocrine cell heterogeneity in the natural history of type 1 diabetes (T1D) in comparison to donors without diabetes.
