Recently, every industry has been working to achieve carbon neutrality, and the wastewater sector is no exception. However, little research focuses on the carbon accounting of wastewater treatment and the roadmap to carbon neutrality. Here, to systematically perform accounting, we provide a sketch that describes three boundaries of the wastewater system and propose that the carbon neutrality of the wastewater system is far beyond the plant boundary. Moreover, we identify the direct and indirect carbon emissions of wastewater treatment. In addition to direct emissions of CH and NO, direct fossil CO emissions from wastewater treatment should be included in accounting to set accurate guidelines. Next, the technologies that assist in achieving carbon-neutral wastewater treatment both within-the-fence of wastewater treatment plants and beyond the plant boundary are summarized. All measurements of energy recovery, resource recovery, and water reuse contribute to reaching this goal. The concepts of energy neutrality and carbon neutrality are identified. Successful wastewater treatment cases in energy self-sufficiency may not achieve carbon neutrality. Meanwhile, resource recovery methods are encouraged, especially to produce carbon-based materials. Ultimately, the trend of preference for the decentralized sewage treatment system is pinpointed, and systematic thinking to set the urban infrastructure layout as a whole is advocated.

Background: Meat is a good source of protein in the human diet, and more than three-quarters of the world's population consumes it. It is the most perishable food item since it has enough nutrients to enable microbial growth. In underdeveloped nations, animals are routinely slaughtered and sold in unsanitary conditions, compromising the bacteriological quality and safety of the meat received from the animals.

Marine mucilage disasters, primarily caused by global warming and marine pollution, threaten food security and the sustainability of marine food resources. This study assessed the microbial risks to public health in common sole, deep-water rose shrimp, European anchovy, Atlantic horse mackerel and Mediterranean mussel following the mucilage disaster in the Sea of Marmara in 2021. The total viable count, total Enterobacteriaceae count and the presence of Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella spp.

The microbial composition of host-associated microbiomes is influenced by co-evolutionary interactions, host genetics, domestication, and the environment. This study investigates the contribution of environmental microbiota from freshwater bodies to the gastrointestinal microbiomes of wild khulans (Equus hemionus hemionus, n = 21) and compares them with those of captive khulans (n = 12) and other equids-Przewalski's horse (n = 82) and domestic horse (n = 26). Using PacBio technology and the LotuS pipeline for 16S rRNA gene sequencing, we analyze microbial diversity and conduct differential abundance, alpha, and beta diversity analyses.

Superhydrophilic hydrogel was typically used as the membrane coating on various substrates for oil/water separation. Nevertheless, these coatings may suffer from such limitations as poor adhesion strength and abrasion-resistance. Thus, the facile construction of hydrogel sponge with 3D connecting channels would be an ideal choice.

The contamination of water resources by selenium (Se), particularly in the highly toxic Se(IV) oxidation state, poses a significant environmental and public health concern due to its detrimental impacts on humans and aquatic ecosystems. In this work, we report a novel composite foam (CFC) by incorporating chitosan (CS), cellulose nanofibers (CNF) and iron oxyhydroxide (FeOOH) nanoparticles through a one-pot fabrication process. The CFC foam features a three-dimensional porous structure, conferring both exceptional mechanical strength and superior adsorption performance for Se(IV), with a maximum equilibrium adsorption capacity of 90 mg/g achieved within 3 h.
