Objectives: The present study sought to explore how decision making is influenced by aging, framing, and social distance in the medical domain. Based on Socioemotional Selectivity Theory, we predicted that social distance would moderate age differences of framing effects as a result of older adults' emphasis on close partners.
Methods: Younger and middle-aged (N = 206) and older (N = 208) adults from Shanghai, China completed 2 medical decision tasks in which they were presented with different descriptions of social distance, namely deciding for close relatives or for strangers. Participants' risk preferences were measured.
Results: The results showed that framing effects were a function of social distance in older adults. Older adults showed smaller framing effects when making decisions for strangers as their preference for the riskier option was reduced in the loss-framed condition. For younger and middle-aged adults, framing effects existed consistently regardless of social distance.
Discussion: These findings suggest that social distance moderates age differences in framing effects in medical decision-making. It also highlights a potential way to improve older adults' medical decision-making quality: having older adults imagine as if they are making medical decisions for a stranger.

To investigate the reasonable calculation value of the transverse design bending moment of a long-span cantilever box girder bridge deck under vehicle load, the plate beam model and beam element frame model were established according to the concept of load effective distribution width in the Chinese highway specifications. The local finite element model and full bridge model of a long-cantilever plate were established using the plate-shell element. The practical calculation formula and finite element analysis of the transverse bending moment of a bridge deck were studied.

Rationale: Lung ultrasound, the most precise diagnostic tool for pleural effusions, is underutilized due to healthcare providers' limited proficiency. To address this, deep learning models can be trained to recognize pleural effusions. However, current models lack the ability to diagnose effusions in diverse clinical contexts, which presents significant challenges.

Transmissibility is used to assess dynamic responses of the occupant-seat system, and most studies have exclusively assessed the transmissibility from the floor to the cushion or the backrest surface with the human body. In this investigation, the vertical vibration transmitted from the floor to six specific locations both on the seat surface and the frame when the seat was fixed on three positions on the track was examined utilizing an SAE J826 manikin and 12 male adults (0.25 to 20 Hz) for a duration of 120 seconds at three vibration amplitudes.

A criterion for the characterization of the retardance effects produced by depolarizing and nondepolarizing linear media on interacting light is established based on Mueller matrices algebra. A consistent general description of retardance properties is performed by means of a serial decomposition of the Mueller matrix into three components, namely an element that encompasses the enpolarizing and depolarizing properties sandwiched by two elliptical retarders containing complete and decoupled information on retardance. The inherent ambiguity derived from the coincident formal structure of rotation matrices and circular retarders is removed though the introduction of the entrance and exit intrinsic reference frames, leading to the concepts of the intrinsic entrance and exit linear retarders, which are defined from the Mueller matrix itself and that are independent of the laboratory reference frames used to represent the incident and emerging polarized light beams, respectively.

Background: Guideline-recommended strategies to interrupt chronic anticoagulation with warfarin or direct oral anticoagulants (DOAC) during the perioperative period of cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) surgery differ worldwide. There is uncertainty concerning the benefits and harms of interrupted and uninterrupted anticoagulation in patients undergoing CIED surgery.
Objectives: To assess the benefits and harms of interrupted anticoagulation (IAC) with either warfarin or DOAC in the perioperative period of CIED surgery versus uninterrupted anticoagulation (UAC), with or without heparin bridging, during an equivalent time frame, for CIED surgery.
