Solid dispersions as effective curcumin vehicles to obtain k-carrageenan functional films for olive oil preservation.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

CIMO, LA SusTEC, Instituto Politécnico de Bragança, Campus de Santa Apolónia, 5300-253 Bragança, Portugal. Electronic address:

Synthetic packaging materials offer cost efficiency and performance but pose environmental risks. This study explores sustainable alternatives by developing k-carrageenan (KC) films functionalized with curcumin, using solid dispersions (SDs) to improve curcumin's compatibility, addressing the challenge of incorporating hydrophobic functionalities into hydrophilic film matrices. Films with varying curcumin content (1-20 wt%; KC1-KC20) were compared to a base film without curcumin (KC0) regarding water solubility, vapor permeability, water contact angle, and tensile properties.

toxicology protocols are meant to support computationally-based assessments using principles that ensure that results can be generated, recorded, communicated, archived, and then evaluated in a uniform, consistent, and reproducible manner. We investigated the availability of models to predict the carcinogenic potential of pregabalin using the ten key characteristics of carcinogens as a framework for organizing mechanistic studies. Pregabalin is a single-species carcinogen producing only one type of tumor, hemangiosarcomas in mice via a nongenotoxic mechanism.

Graphene quantum dots (GQDs), a new solid-state electron transfer material was anchored to nitrogen-doped TiO via sol gel method. The introduction of GQDs effectively extended light absorption of TiO from UV to visible region. GQD-N-TiO demonstrated lower PL intensity at excitation wavelengths of 320 to 450 nm confirming enhanced exciton lifespan.

Mapping the key characteristics of carcinogens for glyphosate and its formulations: A systematic review.

Chemosphere

October 2023

Division of Environmental Health Sciences, School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley, CA, United States. Electronic address:

Glyphosate was classified as a probable human carcinogen (Group 2A) by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) partially due to strong mechanistic evidence in 2015. Since then, numerous studies of glyphosate and its formulations (GBF) have emerged. These studies can be evaluated for cancer hazard identification with the newly described ten key characteristics (KC) of carcinogens approach.
