Although we do not yet know how or when the story of COVID-19 ends, Canadians are welcoming the summer of 2022 with the anticipation of the first prolonged period of near normalcy in two-and-a-half years. This sense of renewal coincides with the start of our roles as the new co-editors-in-chief of Healthcare Quarterly (HQ). Building on HQ's 25 years of excellence in sharing leading practices in health services delivery and policy, we are looking forward to taking the journal in new directions. Although both of us of have had long careers in healthcare and have experienced many cycles of change, this particular point in time feels different. Despite the devastating aftermath of this global pandemic, the disruption comes with an extraordinary level of opportunity. It is in thinking about the future state that we have embraced our new leadership roles with HQ.

The concept of stigma has been applied across many disciplines. Within the context of health and illness, research on stigma tells familiar stories about the impact of a diagnosis on the lives of individuals and their families, and the perceived negative effects of stigma on them and their relationships. This can result in public and private efforts to 'reduce' stigma for certain social groups by raising awareness and sharing more positive stories about their lives.

International students have become one of the main populations in Australian universities. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many international students decided to go to other countries and regions for their higher education due to the border control policies in Australia. Based on the social cognitive career and motivation theory, this study explored the motivations and reasons why Chinese postgraduate international students decided to return to Australia after the Australian government officially re-opened the border for on-campus and face-to-face education and why Chinese postgraduate international students decided to study in Australia instead of other countries, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.
