Fecal sludge and septage (FSS) are more concentrated than domestic wastewater which makes it difficult to treat and requires immediate attention otherwise, it leads towards serious environmental problems. In this review, an attempt has been made to highlight and discuss the various aspects of fecal sludge and septage management (FSSM) like its generation, characterization, containment, transportation, treatment, reuse and disposal. A comparison of existing fecal sludge treatment plants and technologies has been reviewed considering land requirement, capital cost, operation and maintenance cost, advantages and disadvantages. Based on the existing practices and review, a techno-economic treatment scheme is designed and proposed for solid-liquid separation and treatment of FSS with resource-recovery as fertilizer, material for construction, energy and treated effluent. To make FSSM, self-sustainable, a revenue generation model is also delineated for the researchers and decision-makers to evaluate its feasibility and implementation, especially in developing and underdeveloped countries.

Microbial eukaryotes are vital to global microbial diversity, but there is limited information about their composition and sources in contaminated surface waters. This study examined the pathogens and potential sources of microbial eukaryotic communities in polluted sink environments using the 18S rDNA amplicon sequencing combined with the fast expectation-maximization for microbial source tracking (FEAST) program. Six sampling sites were selected along the Pasig-Marikina-San Juan (PAMARISAN) River System, representing different locations within the waterway and classified as sinks (n = 12), whereas animal fecal samples collected from various farms were classified as sources (n = 29).

Faecal sludge (FS) is not extensively evaluated for its potential as a solid fuel mainly due to the general conception of its "highly variable characteristics" in relation to the wide range of on-site sanitation systems. An extensive and systematic FS characterization was therefore conducted on twenty-four samples collected directly from pit latrines, ventilated improved pit latrines (VIPs) and urine-diverting dehydrating toilets (UDDTs) at two depths to understand the impact on properties relevant for combustion. The higher heating value (HHV) for these samples lies between 13 to 22 MJ/kg DM (dry matter).

Given their abundance in human fecal samples, crAssphage and Pepper Mild Mottle Virus (PMMoV) are proposed as indicators for human enteric viruses. This study measured crAssphage and PMMoV in raw sewage samples (n = 24) between June 2014 and May 2015 from two wastewater treatment facilities in southern Arizona, USA. Both crAssphage and PMMoV were detected in nearly 100% of samples.
