Obesity is associated with a series of skeletal muscle impairments and dysfunctions, which are characterized by metabolic disturbances and muscle atrophy. Luteolin is a phenolic phytochemical with broad pharmacological activities. Mitochondrial dysfunction is an interesting therapeutic target to help reduce cancer deaths, and the use of bioactive compounds has emerged as a novel and safe approach to solve this problem. Here, we discuss the information available related to phlorotannins, a type of polyphenol present in brown seaweeds that reportedly functions as antioxidants/pro-oxidants and anti-inflammatory and anti-tumorigenic agents. Specifically, available evidence indicates that dieckol and phloroglucinol promote mitochondrial membrane depolarization and mitochondria-dependent apoptosis.

Aims: Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a common complication of diabetes that causes visual impairment and blindness in adults. This study aimed to explore the protective effects of n-Butylidenephthalide (BP) on hyperglycemia-treated RPE in vitro and in vivo.
Main Methods: C57BL/6 mice were injected with STZ by intraperitoneal to induce early DR and orally administrated with 2 mg/kg BP every day for twelve weeks.
Orally ingested ubiquinol-10 or ubiquinone-10 reaches the intestinal tract and is absorbed by the small intestine of mice mostly in its original form.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is an important lipid-soluble antioxidant and an essential component of the mitochondria. The oral bioavailability of the reduced form of CoQ10, ubiquinol-10, has been reported to be greater than that of the oxidized form of CoQ10, ubiquinone-10, in some studies. In contrast, it has also been highlighted that the oral bioavailability of ubiquinol-10 is not superior to that of ubiquinone-10 because ubiquinol-10 may be oxidized during digestion.
