This paper introduces a machine vision-based system promising low-cost solution for detecting a fatigue crack propagation caused by alternating mechanical stresses. The fatigue crack in technical components usually starts on surfaces at stress concentration points. The presented system was designed to substitute a strain gauge sensor-based measurement using an industrial camera in cooperation with branding software. This paper presents implementation of a machine vision system and algorithm outputs taking on fatigue crack propagation samples.

Hydrogen-assisted (HA) fatigue crack growth (FCG) occurs in ferritic steels, wherein H-dislocation interaction plays a vital role. We aim to model the HAFCG mechanism based on the within the crack tip zone. Our modeling framework is as follows: H is condensed into crack tip and trapped by dislocations; these H significantly decrease dislocation mobility; stress relief via crack blunting is suppressed; localized brittle fracture triggers HAFCG.

Rubber is widely used in situations involving cyclic loads, and the influence of temperature on rubber properties is particularly pronounced under cyclic loading. In this study, mechanical property tests and crack propagation tests of carbon black-filled hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber were conducted at four different operating temperatures. Based on the results of the crack propagation tests, the temperature-dependent characteristics of the Paris-Erdogan parameters and strain energy density were clarified.

Microfluidic Monodispersed Microbubble Generation for Production of Cavitation Nuclei.

Micromachines (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Memphis, Memphis, TN 38152, USA.

Microbubbles, acting as cavitation nuclei, undergo cycles of expansion, contraction, and collapse. This collapse generates shockwaves, alters local shear forces, and increases local temperature. Cavitation causes severe changes in pressure and temperature, resulting in surface erosion.

Insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs), as an important power semiconductor device, are susceptible to thermal stress, thermal fatigue, and mechanical stresses under high-voltage, high-current, and high-power conditions. Elevated heat dissipation within the module leads to fluctuating rises in temperature that accelerate its own degradation and failure, ultimately causing damage to the module as a whole and posing a threat to operator safety. Through ANSYS Workbench simulation analysis, it is possible to accurately predict the temperature distribution, equivalent stress, and equivalent strain of solder materials under actual working conditions, thus revealing the changing laws of the heat-mechanical interaction in solder materials.

Propagation of a Fatigue Crack Through a Hole.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

University Coimbra, Centre for Mechanical Engineering, Materials and Processes (CEMMPRE), Department of Mechanical Engineering, 3030-788 Coimbra, Portugal.

The stop-hole technique is a well-known strategy to extend the fatigue life of cracked components. The ability to estimate fatigue life after the hole is important for safety reasons. The objective here is to develop strategies for the accurate prediction of initiation and propagation life ahead of the stop-hole.
