Are infants' preferences in the number change detection paradigm driven by sequence patterns? | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Inter-individual differences in infants' numerosity processing have been assessed using a change detection paradigm, where participants were presented with two concurrent streams of images, one alternating between two numerosities and the other showing one constant numerosity. While most infants look longer at the changing stream in this paradigm, the reasons underlying these preferences have remained unclear. We suggest that, besides being attracted by numerosity changes, infants perhaps also respond to the alternating pattern of the changing stream. We conducted two experiments (N = 32) with 6-month-old infants to assess this hypothesis. In the first experiment, infants responded to changes in numerosity even when the changing stream showed numerosities in an unpredictable random order. In the second experiment, infants did not display any preference when an alternating stream was pitted against a random stream. These findings do not provide evidence that the alternating pattern of the changing stream contributes to drive infants' preferences. Instead, around the age of 6 months, infants' responses in the numerosity change detection paradigm appear to be mainly driven by changes in numerosity, with different levels of preference reflecting inter-individual difference in the acuity of numerosity perception.

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (Jing-Jin-Ji) Region is home to the most acute economic, resource, and environmental conflicts in the Bohai Sea region, and the rivers entering the sea carry abundant total nitrogen (TN) input into the Bohai Bay, which is the main land-based input causing eutrophication of the bay. The Haihe River Basin in the Jing-Jin-Ji Region was divided into 112 (2018-2019) and 187 (2020-2022) control units, and the spatial and temporal variations in TN concentration in the surface water of the Haihe River Basin in the Jing-Jin-Ji Region were systematically analyzed from 2018 to 2022 by combining the Euclidean distance analysis method and the K-means clustering analysis method. The results showed that the annual average concentration of TN in the region showed a trend of decreasing (2018-2020) and then increasing (2021-2022), in which the concentration of TN increased significantly from June 2021 to June 2022.

Modulating the fatty acid composition of black soldier fly larvae via substrate fermentation.

Animal

November 2024

CLMT Research Group for Insect Production and Processing, Department of Microbial and Molecular Systems (M(2)S), KU Leuven, Geel Campus, Kleinhoefstraat 4, 2440 Geel, Belgium. Electronic address:

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL, Hermetia illucens) contain high amounts of proteins and essential amino acids and are therefore an appropriate feed source. However, they lack essential fatty acids (FAs), specifically ω-3 and ω-6, making them a less desirable feed choice for aquaculture. The aim of this study was to increase the ω-3 and ω-6 FA concentrations in BSFL by manipulating the FA composition in their rearing substrate.

Changes and influencing factors of phytoplankton in the Tianjin coastal waters of Bohai Bay at the early stage of COVID-19 outbreak.

Mar Pollut Bull

December 2024

Tianjin Key Laboratory for Marine Environmental Research and Service, School of Marine Science and Technology, Tianjin University, Tianjin 300072, China. Electronic address:

We studied the characteristics of plankton community and its response to water environmental factors at the early stage of COVID-19 outbreak (2019-2020) in the Tianjin coastal waters of Bohai Bay. The water quality showed a good trend during this period, due to the reduction of pollution brought by the runoff rivers and water exchange driven by the circulation. In the survey area, 68 species of diatomata and dinoflagellata phytoplankton were found, where diatomata was the dominant population.

Multiyear and seasonal wide-scale indicators for French surface waters contamination by WFD substances.

Environ Sci Pollut Res Int

December 2024

Office Français de la Biodiversité (OFB), 5 Allée Félix Nadar, 94300, Vincennes, France.

This study offers an unprecedented valuation of the French surface waters WFD chemical monitoring dataset, covering 101 substances (metals, industrial and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), plant protection product (PPP) and biocides active substances, combustion residues) measured monthly on 4000 sites of the 6 main continental river basins, during 12 years (2009-2020). The concentration data were first made comparable through an original process removing the bias induced by the space-and-time heterogeneity of the monitoring labs performance, to gather a reference workable set of monthly contamination indicators. These were then used to display the substances' seasonal and interannual timeseries, revealing, e.

Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, governments across the world implemented processes and policies to limit the spread of COVID-19, especially in long-term care (LTC) homes. This led to changes in technology use for persons living in LTC homes, their families and friends, as well as the paid workforce dedicated to caring for them.

Objective: The study describes the role of technology and its impact on the experiences of LTC staff working in northern and rural areas in Western Canada during COVID-19.
