Low-dimensional high-entropy materials, such as nanoparticles and two-dimensional (2D) layers, have great potential for catalysis and energy applications. However, it is still challenging to synthesize 2D layered high-entropy materials through a bottom-up soft chemistry method, due to the difficulty of mixing and assembling multiple elements in 2D layers. Here, we report a simple polyol process for the synthesis of a series of 2D layered high-entropy transition metal (Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni, and Zn) hydroxides (HEHs), involving the hydrolysis and inorganic polymerization of metal-containing species in ethylene glycol media. The as-synthesized HEHs demonstrate 2D layered structures with interlayer distances ranging from 0.860 to 0.987 nm and homogeneous elemental distribution of designed equimolar stoichiometry in the layers. These 2D HEHs exhibit a low overpotential of 275 mV at 10 mA cm in a 0.1 M KOH electrolyte for the oxygen evolution reaction. Superparamagnetic spinel-type high-entropy nanoparticles can also be obtained by annealing these HEHs. Our polyol approach creates opportunities for synthesizing low-dimensional high-entropy materials with promising properties and applications.

Electrolyte engineering has emerged as an effective strategy for stabilizing Zn-metal anodes. However, a single solute or solvent additive is far from sufficient to meet the requirements for electrolyte cycling stability. Here, we report a new-type high-entropy electrolyte composed of equal molar amounts of Zn(OTf)2 and LiOTf, along with equal volumes of H2O, triethyl phosphate, and dimethyl sulfoxide, which enhances electrolyte stability by increasing solvation entropy.

Institute for Sustainable Energy and Resources, Key Laboratory of Shandong Provincial Universities for Functional Molecules and Materials, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Qingdao University, Qingdao, Shandong, 266071, China.

Alkaline water (HO) electrolysis is currently a commercialized green hydrogen (H) production technology, yet the unsatisfactory hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance severely limits its energy conversion efficiency and cost reduction. Herein, PtRuFeCoNi high entropy alloys (HEAs) is synthesized and subsequently exploited electrochemically induced structural oxidation processes to construct self-reconfigurable HEAs, as an efficient alkaline HER catalyst. The optimized self-reconstructed PtRuFeCoNi HEAs with the HEAs and cobalt rutheniate interface (HEAs-CoRuO) exhibits excellent alkaline HER performance, requiring just 11.

High-entropy layered double hydroxides tailor Pt electron state for promoting acidic hydrogen evolution reaction.

Despite the advancement of the Pt-catalyzed hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) through oxophilic metal-hydroxide surface hybridization, its stability in acidic solutions remains unsatisfactory. This is primarily due to excessive aggregation of active hydrogen, which hinders subsequent hydrogen desorption, coupled with the poor operational stability of metal hydroxides. In this study, we have designed Pt nanoparticles-modified NiFeCoCuCr high-entropy layered double hydroxides (Pt/HE-LDH) that exhibit exceptional catalytic activity toward HER in acidic electrolytes.

High-k metal oxides are gradually replacing the traditional SiO dielectric layer in the new generation of electronic devices. In this paper, we report the production of five-element high entropy metal oxides (HEMOs) dielectric films by solution method and analyzed the role of each metal oxide in the system by characterizing the film properties. On this basis, we found optimal combination of (AlGaTiYZr)O with the best dielectric properties, exhibiting a low leakage current of 1.
