Cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) are promising for various applications such as substrates of flexible devices and reinforcement materials. Most of these applications require control of the drying process of the aqueous CNF dispersions. However, the existing reports examine the surface of dried materials because scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) are not compatible with either the wet conditions or structure inside the materials. We report the characterization of these aqueous dispersions by the use of optical microscopy although it cannot be used directly to observe CNFs. We add a small portion of colloidal particles into the samples and obtain their trajectory data. The trajectories of Brownian motion include information on the surrounding environments. We analyze the microscopy movie data from the viewpoint of statistical mechanics, and reveal the mesoscale characteristics beyond viscosity. In particular, the possible non-uniformity of the dispersion is quantitatively examined through the framework of the generalized diffusion.

Water pollution because of the presence of heavy metals remains a serious worry. The present work demonstrates the exclusion of cobalt ion (or Co(II)) from water using novel and cost-effective biosorbents. Initially, the biosorbent was chemically modified using orthophosphoric acid and then subjected to calcination to result acid modified date seed biochar (AMDB).

This study aims to utilize secondary aluminum dross waste to synthesize Fe-Al layered double hydroxide (Fe-Al LDH) for efficient adsorption of arsenic from drinking water. The synthesis process was based on a multi-step hydrometallurgical approach, in which the aluminum content in the waste was first converted to sodium aluminate. This was followed by the transformation into Fe-Al LDH through a series of processes, including gelation, sol formation, simultaneous precipitation, and aging.

This report investigates the preparation, characterization, and application of activated carbon derived from Spathodea campanulata flowers (SCAC) to remove Congo Red (CR) dye from aqueous streams. SCAC was synthesized using orthophosphoric acid activation which yielded a mesoporous material with a specific surface area of (986.41 m/g), significantly exceeding values reported for flower-derived activated carbons in the available literature.

The rapid industrialization and human activities in catchments have posed notable global challenges in removing of heavy metal contaminants from wastewater. Here, Schiff-bases (SB) of cyanoguanidine (CG) and salicylaldehyde (SA) were covalently grafted on a magnetic nanocomposite of chitosan to form a hybrid magnetic nanostructure (FeO@CS-CGSB). The synthesized structure was characterized using various techniques such as Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), dynamic light scattering (DLS), zeta potential, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area analysis (BET).

Fulfilment of energy demand by utilizing renewable energy sources that do not contribute to the production of greenhouse gases is a step forward in mitigating global warming. However, with the energy sources being intermittent in nature, renewable energy needs to be stored effectively on a grid scale. In this context, the development of redox-flow batteries has emerged as a promising technology where charging and discharging processes are accomplished by the redox shuttling of the electrolytes, namely anolytes and catholytes.
