A parallel four-quadrant sensing method utilizing a specially designed gold nanodot array is created for sensing virus-like particles with a sub-diffraction limit size (∼100 nm) in a wide-field image. Direct label-free sensing of viruses using multiple four-quadrant sensing channels in parallel in a wide-field view enables the possibility of high-throughput onsite screening of viruses.

An erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a single-mode fiber-no-core fiber-single-mode fiber (SMF-NCF-SMF) structure was constructed and experimentally demonstrated for label-free DNA hybridization measurement. The SMF-NCF-SMF structure acts as a sensing element and a filter to select the laser wavelength. The proposed fiber ring laser sensor exhibits a high optical signal-to-noise ratio (SNR, >50 dB) and narrow full width at half maximum (FWHM, <0.

A ground-breaking graphene-based biosensor designed for label-free detection of immunoglobulin M (IgM) achieving a remarkable concentration of 100 zeptomolar (10 m), is reported. The sensor is a two-terminal device and incorporates a millimeter-wide gold interface, bio-functionalized with ≈10 anti-IgM antibodies and capacitively coupled to a bare graphene electrode through a water-soaked paper strip. In this configuration, few affinity binding events trigger a collective electrostatic reorganization of the protein layer, leading to an extended surface potential (SP) shift of the biofunctionalized Au surface.

The development of point-of-care testing (POCT) methods is highly desirable in molecular detection, as they enable disease diagnosis and biomarker monitoring on-site or at home. Repurposing existing POCT devices to detect diverse biomarkers is an economical way to develop new devices for POCT use. Personal glucose meter (PGM) is one of the most used off-the-shelf POCT devices that has been reused to detect non-glucose targets.

Here, we developed a novel, cost-effective fluorescence light-up biosensor for Pb detection based on a label-free G-quadruplex combined with modified thioflavin T (ThT) derivatives. Among the various G-quadruplex sequences tested, only T2 exhibited fluorescence light-up properties upon interacting with the modified ThT derivatives in the presence of Pb. To enhance the Pb sensing system, we also compared modified ThT derivatives, including the newly synthesized propyl-substituted ThT (ThT-P) and butyl-substituted ThT (ThT-B).

Background: The detection of genetic sequences represents the gold standard procedure for species discrimination, genetic characterisation of tumours, and identification of pathogens. The development of new molecular detection methods, accessible and cost effective, is of great relevance. Biosensors based on plasmonic nanoparticles, such as gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), provide a powerful and versatile platform for highly sensitive, economic, user-friendly and label-free sensing.
