In this study, a membraneless photofuel cell, namely, μ-DropFC, was designed and developed to harvest chemical and solar energies simultaneously. The prototypes can also perform environmental remediation to demonstrate their multitasking potential as a sustainable hybrid device in a single embodiment. A hydrogen peroxide (HO) microdroplet at optimal pH and salt loading was utilized as a fuel integrated with Al as an anode and zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPC)-coated Cu as a cathode. The presence of n-type semiconductor ZnPC in between the electrolyte and metal enabled the formation of a photo-active Schottky junction suitable for power generation under light. Concurrently, the oxidation and reduction of HO on the electrodes helped in the conversion of chemical energy into the electrical one in the same membraneless setup. The suspension of Au nanoparticles (Au NPs) in the droplet helped in enhancing the overall power density under photonic illumination through the effects of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). Furthermore, the presence of photo-active n-type CdS NPs enabled the catalytic photo-degradation of dyes under light in the same embodiment. A 40 μL μ-DropFC could show a significantly high open circuit potential of ∼0.58 V along with a power density of 0.72 mW cm. Under the same condition, the integration of ten such μ-DropFCs could produce a power density of ∼7 mW cm at an efficiency of 3.4%, showing the potential of the prototype for a very large scale integration (VLSI). The μ-DropFC could also degrade ∼85% of an industrial pollutant, rhodamine 6G, in 1 h while generating a power density of ∼0.6 mW cm. The performance parameters of μ-DropFCs were found to be either comparable or superior to the existing prototypes. In a way, the affordable, portable, membraneless, and high-performance μ-DropFC could harvest energy from multiple resources while engaging in environmental remediation.

Background: Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-intrusive technique that provides comprehensive insights into the electrical activities of the brain's cerebral cortex. The brain signals obtained from EEGs can be used as a neuropsychological biomarker to detect different stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD) through quantitative EEG (qEEG) analysis. This paper investigates the difference in the abnormalities of resting state EEG (rEEG) signals between eyes-open (EOR) and eyes-closed (ECR) in AD by analyzing 19- scalp electrode EEG signals and making a comparison with healthy controls (HC).

Unlabelled: This study aims to create a fatigue recognition system that utilizes electroencephalogram (EEG) signals to assess a driver's physiological and mental state, with the goal of minimizing the risk of road accidents by detecting driver fatigue regardless of physical cues or vehicle attributes. A fatigue state recognition system was developed using transfer learning applied to partial ensemble averaged EEG power spectral density (PSD). The study utilized layer-wise relevance propagation (LRP) analysis to identify critical cortical regions and frequency bands for effective fatigue discrimination.

Herein, we discuss the idea that fluorescent materials/molecules should logically show potential photoelectrochemistry (PEC) activity, and, in particular, the PEC of fluorescent small molecules (previously usually acting only as dye sensitizers for conventional semiconductors) is explored. After examining the PEC activities of some typical inorganic or organic fluorescent materials/molecules and by adopting methyl violet (MV) with the highest PEC activity among the examined fluorescent small molecules, a new and efficient (MV/Au nanoparticles (AuNPs))/fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) photoanode without conventional semiconductor(s) is prepared by layer-by-layer alternating the electrodeposition of AuNPs and the adsorption of MV. A bilirubin oxidase (BOD)/CuCoO/FTO bio-photocathode is prepared by electrodeposition, calcination and cast-coating.

Flexible zinc-air batteries (FZABs) present a promising solution for the next generation of power sources in wearable electronics, owing to their high energy density, cost-effectiveness, and safety. However, solid-state electrolytes for FZABs continue to face challenges related to rapid water loss and low ionic conductivity. In this study, a hydrophilic and stable tetramethylguanidine-modified graphene oxide as an additive, which is incorporated into sodium polyacrylate to develop a high-performance gel polymer electrolyte (GPE), is designed.

Herein, NaCl-templated mesoporous hard carbons (NMCs) have been designed and engineered with tunable surface properties as anode materials for potassium-ion batteries (KIBs) and hybrid capacitors (KICs). By utilizing "water-in-oil" emulsions, the size of NaCl templates is precisely modified, leading to smaller particles that enable the formation of primary carbon structures with reduced particle size and secondary structures with 3D interconnected mesoporosity. These features significantly enhance electrode density, reduce particle-to-particle resistance, and improve electrolyte wettability.
