Published: June 2019

Epitaxial multiferroic BiFeCrO nanoisland arrays with a lateral size of ∼100 nm have been successfully fabricated by patterned SiO template-assisted pulsed laser deposition. The as-grown island structure exhibits promising multiferroic properties ( ferroelectric and magnetic) even at nanometer dimensions at room temperature. This work demonstrates an effective strategy to fabricate high-density nonvolatile ferroelectric/multiferroic memory devices.

Nano-island-encapsulated cobalt single-atom catalysts for breaking activity-stability trade-off in Fenton-like reactions.

Nat Commun

Single-atom catalysts (SACs) have been increasingly acknowledged for their performance in sustainable Fenton-like catalysis. However, SACs face a trade-off between activity and stability in peroxymonosulfate (PMS)-based systems. Herein, we design a nano-island encapsulated single cobalt atom (Co-ZnO) catalyst to enhance the activity and stability of PMS activation for contaminant degradation via an "island-sea" synergistic effect.

Template-Guided Nondeterministic Assembly of Organosilica Nanodots for Multifunctional Physical Unclonable Functions.

Jieyang Branch of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Guangdong Laboratory, Jieyang 515200, China.

Optical physical unclonable functions (PUFs) are gaining attention as a robust security solution for identification in the expanding Internet of Things (IoT). To enhance the security and functionality of PUFs, integrating multiple optical responses─such as fluorescence and structural color─into a single system is essential. These diverse optical properties enable multilevel authentication, where different layers of security can be verified under varying light conditions, greatly reducing the risk of counterfeiting.

Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) offers significant enhancements to weak Raman signals, which has been widely used for the detection of ultra-low concentrations of molecules. Obtaining repeatable SERS substrates with high density "hot spots" is one of the main challenges for quantitative analysis using SERS. Herein, a SERS substrate based on Au nanoflower/nanoisland (NF/NI) hybrid substrate is constructed.

Switchable topological polar states in epitaxial BaTiO nanoislands on silicon.

Nat Commun

November 2024

Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie, Hahn-Meitner Platz 1, 14109, Berlin, Germany.

A fascinating aspect of nanoscale ferroelectric materials is the emergence of topological polar textures, which include various complex and stable polarization configurations. The manipulation of such topological textures through external stimuli like electric fields holds promise for advanced nanoelectronics applications. There are, however, several challenges to reach potential applications, among which reliably creating and controlling these textures at the nanoscale on silicon, and with lead-free compounds.
