The loess regions distribute widely in Northwestern China, North America and Eastern Europe. For these regions, landfill is a suitable technology for solid waste treatment. However, as a landfill cover material, loess is not very effective in controlling the emission of malodorous gases. The present study modified loess with biologically stabilized leachate, and investigated the capacities and mechanisms of the modified loess to remove odorous NH and HS. The removal rates of NH and HS at different acclimation time, targeted gas concentrations and temperatures were measured. It was found that the NH removal rate of the modified loess was up to 0.08 μmol/(g·hr), which was 1.8 times that of the virgin loess. The HS removal rate of the modified loess was up to 1.74 μmol/(g·hr), which was 1.25 times that of the virgin loess. The half-meter loess layer modified by biologically stabilized leachate achieved nearly 100% removal of HS. The improvement of NH and HS removal ability was mainly due to the enrichment of relevant microorganisms. This work proposed a novel method for in-situ control of malodorous pollutants in landfills in the loess regions, and proved that the in-situ removal of NH and HS using the loess modified with biologically stabilized leachate is feasible and cost-effective.

The ecological niche separation of microbial interactions in forest ecosystems is critical to maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity and has yet to be comprehensively explored in microbial ecology. This study investigated the impacts of soil properties on microbial interactions and carbon metabolism potential in forest soils across 67 sites in China. Using redundancy analysis and random forest models, we identified soil pH and dissolved organic matter (DOM) aromaticity as the primary drivers of microbial interactions, representing abiotic conditions and resource niches, respectively.

Refractory disease and relapse are major challenges in acute myeloid leukemia (AML) therapy attributed to survival of leukemic stem cells (LSC). To target LSCs, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) provide an elegant solution, combining the specificity of antibodies with highly potent payloads. We aimed to investigate if FLT3-20D9h3-ADCs delivering either the DNA-alkylator duocarmycin (DUBA) or the microtubule-toxin monomethyl auristatin F (MMAF) can eradicate quiescent LSCs.

Cytoplasmic mRNA decay and quality control machineries in eukaryotes.

mRNA degradation pathways have key regulatory roles in gene expression. The intrinsic stability of mRNAs in the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells varies widely in a gene- and isoform-dependent manner and can be regulated by cellular cues, such as kinase signalling, to control mRNA levels and spatiotemporal dynamics of gene expression. Moreover, specialized quality control pathways exist to rid cells of non-functional mRNAs produced by errors in mRNA processing or mRNA damage that negatively impact translation.

Understanding the molecular mechanisms that confer cold resistance in mammalian cells might be relevant for advancing medical applications. This study aimed to exploit the protective function of Late Embryogenesis Abundant (LEA) proteins, known to provide resistance to low temperatures in extremophiles and plants, by their exogenous expression in mammalian cells, and compare their effects with the well characterized antioxidant, vitamin E.Remarkably, the expression of LEA proteins in mammalian cells exerted cold-protective effect similar to Vitamin E.
