Introduction: Restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) and total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis (TC-IRA) are traditional surgical options for individuals with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Re-appraisal and modification to these techniques, such as near-total colectomy with ileo-distal sigmoid anastomosis (NT-IDSA) and RPC with robotic intracorporeal single-stapled anastomosis (RPC-RiSSA), have been implemented in recent years. This study aimed to evaluate the early postoperative outcomes associated with novel techniques employed in a single centre for restorative surgery in patients with FAP.

Article Synopsis
  • Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) is a less common method compared to multiport laparoscopic surgery (MPLS) for colonic procedures, prompting a systematic review to assess its feasibility, safety, and oncological outcomes.
  • The review analyzed multiple studies (from September to October 2023) that compared SILC with MPLC, focusing on complications and results, finding no significant differences in major outcomes, although SILC had a shorter incision.
  • Despite a gradual increase in SILS cases, its popularity has plateaued in Japan, along with a decline in related research articles, but advances in robotic surgery may revive interest in the technique.

Background: To assess emotion regulation strategies in a clear and direct manner, Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) was developed based on the process model of emotion regulation. ERQ primarily assesses an individual's propensity for reappraisal (a cognitive change in the individual's psychological state in specific situations) and expressive suppression (a regulatory response where an individual alters their emotional response after the onset of an emotional reaction). Recent studies have suggested that the abbreviated 8-item version of the ERQ exhibits comparable model fit to the original version.

Article Synopsis
  • A study analyzed the outcomes of robotic pancreaticoduodenectomy (RPD) by comparing results from two groups of 500 patients—early (first 250) and late (last 250)—to assess feasibility and surgical risks over time.
  • The late group showed a significantly lower conversion rate (5.6%) compared to the early group (12.0%), and overall surgical complications and mortality rates were relatively low and similar between both groups.
  • The findings suggest that RPD is technically feasible and justified, providing good oncological outcomes with benefits of low blood loss and surgical mortality, particularly for ampullary adenocarcinoma patients.

Advancements in the research on so-called "synthetic (artificial) cells" have been mainly characterized by an important acceleration in all sorts of experimental approaches, providing a growing amount of knowledge and techniques that will shape future successful developments. Synthetic cell technology, indeed, shows potential in driving a revolution in science and technology. On the other hand, theoretical and epistemological investigations related to what synthetic cells "are," how they behave, and what their role is in generating knowledge have not received sufficient attention.
