Published: May 2023

Intra-articular viscoelastic supplements are commonly administered by musculoskeletal radiologists for the treatment of symptomatic osteoarthritis (OA). This article provides an overview of the putative mechanism of action of the agents, a brief review of the evidence base underlying the practice, a commentary on some of the major society guidelines regarding the treatment, and a description of the adverse events that are associated with intra-articular hyaluronic acid administration.

Sulfur Diffusion Studies Imitating Recycled Ground-Rubber-Containing Compounds.

Polymers (Basel)

November 2024

Elastomer Technology and Engineering (ETE), University of Twente, 7522 NB Enschede, The Netherlands.

In-rubber properties of vulcanizates deteriorate in the presence of incorporated recycled ground rubber (GR). This behavior is partly explained by a possible diffusion of sulfur from the rubber matrix into the GR. Therefore, the sulfur concentration and, thus, the crosslink density in the matrix are reduced.

Glutenin macropolymer (GMP) plays an important role in wheat gluten fractions, and extensively presents in the frozen dough. However, the effects of freezing treatment on GMP remain not abundantly understood. In this study, we investigated the structure and physico-chemical properties of GMP under frozen storage through experimental methods and bioinformatics algorithms.

Macroscopic creep behavior of spheroids derived from mesenchymal stem cells under compression.

J Mech Behav Biomed Mater

January 2025

Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Nagoya University, Nagoya, Japan.

Spheroid culture, where cells are aggregated three-dimensionally, is expected to have applications as a model that better recapitulates invivo environment beyond two-dimensional environments. When human mesenchymal stem cells are subjected to spheroid culture in the presence of osteogenesis supplements, the gene expression of osteocyte differentiation marker is greatly increased within a short period compared to two-dimensional culture. However, how such alterations may be reflected to mechanical properties of the spheroid remains unknown.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines the viscoelastic properties of epoxy matrix composites reinforced with different types and concentrations of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), focusing on pristine CNTs (EPB-CNT) and silane-modified multi-walled CNTs (EB-CNT) with varying amounts (0%, 1%, 2%, 4%).
  • - Key findings indicate that the silane modification leads to enhanced thermal and mechanical properties due to stronger interfacial interactions, with the highest performance seen in the ECB-CNT 4% composite, which displayed superior tensile strength and thermal stability.
  • - Various testing methods, including tensile tests, thermal analysis, and microscopic characterization, confirmed improved material distribution and reduced voids in ECB-CNT
