Lignin-based activated carbon (LAC) is a promising high-quality functional material due to high surface area, abundant porous structure, and various functional groups. Modification is the most important step to functionalize LAC by altering its porous and chemical properties. This Review summarizes the state-of-the-art modification technologies of LAC toward advanced applications. Promising modification approaches are reviewed to display their effects on the preparation of LAC. The multiscale changes in the porosity and the surface chemistry of LAC are fully discussed. Advanced applications are then introduced to show the potential of LAC for supercapacitor electrode, catalyst support, hydrogen storage, and carbon dioxide capture. Finally, the mechanistic structure-function relationships of LAC are elaborated. These results highlight that modification technologies play a special role in altering the properties and defining the functionalities of LAC, which could be a promising porous carbon material toward industrial applications.

Incompatible electrode/electrolyte interface often leads to dendrite growth, parasitic reactions and corrosion, posing significant challenges to the application of Zn anodes. Herein, we introduce a biomimetic antifreeze protein localized gel electrolyte (ALGE) with multifunctional capabilities to address these issues by combining electrolyte modification with interface optimization. ALGE modifies the Zn2+ solvation structure and the hydrogen-bond network adjacent to zinc anode, effectively suppressing hydrogen evolution.

The photoelectrochemical properties of hematite-based photoanodes are hindered by severe carrier recombination and poor reaction activity, which is a major challenge. Herein, we coupled zirconium-doped α-FeO (Zr:FeO) and phosphating cobalt molybdate electrocatalyst (P-CoMoO) to ameliorate the above difficulties. The conductivity and carrier density of hematite significantly increase by Zr doping.

The widespread adoption of chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy has been limited by complex, resource-intensive manufacturing processes. This review discusses the latest innovations aiming to improve and streamline CAR T-cell production across key steps like T-cell activation, genetic modification, expansion, and scaling. Promising techniques highlighted include generating CAR T cells from non-activated lymphocytes to retain a stem-like phenotype and function, non-viral gene transfer leveraging platforms like transposon and CRISPR, all-in-one fully automated bioreactors like the CliniMACS Prodigy and the Lonza Cocoon, rapid CAR T-cell manufacturing via abbreviating or eliminating ex vivo T-cell culture, implementing decentralized point-of-care automated manufacturing platforms, and optimizing centralized bioreactor infrastructure integrating end-to-end automation.

A series of novel demethylzeylasteral derivatives 1-3 was synthesized by performing modifications on the aldehyde groups at the C-4 positions. Subsequently, the anti - proliferative activities of derivatives 1-3 was evaluated using three human cancer cell line models (HCT116, SKOV3, and HepG2) and the CCK - 8 assay. Compared with demethylzeylasteral, derivative 2 exhibited a remarkable inhibitory effect on HCT116 (4.
