The 2-deoxy-D-[14C]glucose autoradiographic technique was used to assess metabolic activity across stratum griseum superficiale, stratum opticum, and stratum griseum mediale of the superior colliculus, at intervals of 1 to 90 days after a unilateral visual cortex lesion. Initially, glucose metabolism ipsilateral to the lesion was more depressed in stratum griseum mediale than in superficiale, but beginning at about 14 days postlesion this layer pattern reversed. The rise in mediale metabolic activity correlated in time with a decline in generalized cortical depression. On the basis of anatomic connections, we concluded that the generalized cortical depression had disrupted input to stratum griseum mediale from cortical areas other than area 17, and that with recovery of cortical metabolic activity, stratum griseum mediale metabolic activity increased to nearly normal.

Background: Numerous studies have confirmed that stimulating the mid-brain motor nuclei can regulate movement forcibly for robo-pigeons, but research on behavior modulation using non-motor nuclei is scarce.
Objective: In this study, we constructed a spatial preference behavior by stimulating the stratum griseum periventriculare (SGP), a nucleus correlated with fear and escape, for robo-pigeons.
Methods: The study was carried out in a square-enclosed experimental field, with a designated box serving as the 'safe' area for the robo-pigeons.

Teleost fish exhibit the most pronounced and widespread adult neurogenesis. Recently, functional development and the fate of newborn neurons have been reported in the optic tectum (OT) of fish. To determine the role of neurogenesis in the OT, this study used histological, immunohistochemical, and electron microscopic investigations on 18 adult Molly fish specimens (Poecilia sphenops).

The avian optic tectum (OT) has been studied for its diverse functions, yet a comprehensive molecular landscape at the cellular level has been lacking. In this study, we applied spatial transcriptome sequencing and single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) to explore the cellular organization and molecular characteristics of the avian OT from two species: and . We identified precise layer structures and provided comprehensive layer-specific signatures of avian OT.

In this investigation the morphological and morphometrical features of the optic tectum in post-hatch broiler chicken were studied macroscopically and microscopically. The present study was conducted on 70 day old broiler chicks which were reared up to 42 days. The whole experimental period of study was divided into seven groups (from group I to VII) at weekly interval (days 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42).

Data from studies analyzing the differentiation and functional connectivity of embryonic neural tissue grafted into the mammalian nervous system has led to the clinical testing of the fetal graft approach in patients with neurodegenerative disease. While some success has been achieved, ethical concerns have led to a search for alternative therapeutic strategies, mostly exploring the use of neural precursors or neurons derived from pluripotent stem cells to replace damaged host neurons and restore lost circuitries. These more recent studies address questions of graft viability, differentiation, and connectivity similar to those posed by researchers in earlier fetal transplant work, thus reviews of the fetal graft literature may inform and help guide ongoing research in the stem cell/organoid field.
