Introduction: The modified Ferriman-Gallwey (mFG) scale is accepted as a useful clinical scoring system in the evaluation of hirsutism.

Aim: To prevent overlooking hirsutism diagnoses and facilitate patient examinations in ongoing pandemic conditions by simplifying the mFG score.

Material And Methods: This study included 227 patients who were diagnosed with hirsutism and had mFG scores of ≥ 8. Hair distribution and hair growth intensity of nine different body regions in the mFG score were examined.

Results: Among our patients with hirsutism, terminal hair was present on the chin in 97.4% ( = 221), thighs in 96.5% ( = 219), upper lip in 94.7% ( = 215), and lower abdomen in 92.1% ( = 205), and this was significantly higher compared with the remaining five regions ( < 0.001 for each comparison). Terminal hair growth scored as ≥ 1 was found in 89% of the patients ( = 202) for the combination of the chin, thighs, and upper lip, and in 87.2% ( = 198) for the combination of the chin, thighs, and lower abdomen. When the chin and thighs were evaluated together, 75.3% ( = 171) of the patients had ≥ 2 terminal hair growth.

Conclusions: In addition to the chin and thighs being the main regions of terminal hair growth, examination of the upper lip or lower abdomen can sufficiently help predict hirsutism. During the ongoing pandemic conditions when we need to follow social distancing rules, a practical approach to the mFG scoring system will facilitate the work of many physicians, including dermatologists, and will shorten the patient's stay in the clinic.

Hair is a ubiquitous and robust mammalian tissue with biological, clinical, forensic, social, and economic significance. The hair shaft proteome reflects both structural proteins, dominated by cuticular intermediate filament keratins and associated proteins, and proteins involved in the final cellular processes of terminally differentiating corneocytes prior to cornification. These distinct biological processes involve cell maintenance, biosynthesis, senescence, and xenobiotic response.

A modiolar-pillar gradient in auditory-nerve dendritic length: A novel post-synaptic contribution to dynamic range?

Auditory-nerve fibers (ANFs) from a given cochlear region can vary in threshold sensitivity by up to 60 dB, corresponding to a 1000-fold difference in stimulus level, although each fiber innervates a single inner hair cell (IHC) via a single synapse. ANFs with high-thresholds also have low spontaneous rates (SRs) and synapse on the side of the IHC closer to the modiolus, whereas the low-threshold, high-SR fibers synapse on the side closer to the pillar cells. Prior biophysical work has identified modiolar-pillar differences in both pre- and post-synaptic properties, but a comprehensive explanation for the wide range of sensitivities remains elusive.

Following facial reconstruction with a scalp flap, unwanted hair is a common esthetic problem. Reports on the safety, effectiveness, and differences in laser hair removal before, during, and after tissue expansion are lacking. The authors aimed to assess the efficacy of 800-nm diode laser hair removal before, during, and after flap expansion.

Auditory neuropathy (AN) is an under-recognized form of hearing loss characterized by lesions in inner hair cells (IHCs), ribbon synapses and spiral ganglion neurons (SGNs). The lack of a targeted therapy for AN has increased the need for a better understanding of the pathogenic mechanism of AN. As mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling is ubiquitous in many biological processes, its alteration may facilitate the pathogenesis of multiple sites in AN.

Vestibular afferent neurons develop normally in the absence of quantal/glutamatergic input.

Article Synopsis
  • - The vestibular nerve, crucial for balance, displays diversity among its neurons, influenced by low-voltage-gated potassium channels, particularly during early development when hair cell activity is significant.
  • - Researchers studied mice without functional glutamate transmission from hair cells to see if their vestibular neurons still exhibited this biophysical diversity, using techniques like immunohistochemistry and patch-clamp electrophysiology.
  • - The results indicated that even without glutamate input, the knockout mice maintained normal vestibular system development and function, showing no balance issues and preserving the diversity of vestibular neuron activity patterns, though some subtle changes were observed in the largest ganglion cells.
