Based on the analysis of the airborne bistatic synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging geometric mode, an extended nonlinear chirp scaling algorithm is employed to simulate and verify the imaging effect of the bistatic SARs. A gradient theory-based two-dimensional resolution bistatic SAR model is proposed, and the constraints of the multi-platform flight trajectory parameters meeting the imaging accuracy of the bistatic SAR are analyzed. Finally, through the bistatic SAR imaging simulation of cooperative flight trajectories under various situations, the spatial configuration constraint envelope between the flight vehicles to achieve the optimal resolution is revealed. The results of this paper will provide a theoretical reference for the SAR application in formation flight control.

The BELSAR dataset consists of high-resolution multitemporal airborne mono- and bistatic fully-polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in L-band, alongside concurrent measurements of vegetation and soil biogeophysical variables measured in maize and winter wheat fields during the summer of 2018 in Belgium. Its collection was funded by the European Space Agency (ESA) to address the lack of publicly-accessible experimental datasets combining multistatic SAR and in situ measurements. As such, it offers an opportunity to advance the development of SAR remote sensing science and applications for agricultural monitoring and hydrology.

Comparison of Imaging Radar Configurations for Roadway Inspection and Characterization.

Sensors (Basel)

This paper investigates the performance of a wide variety of radar imaging modes, such as nadir-looking B-scan, or side-looking synthetic aperture radar tomographic acquisitions, performed in both back- and forward-scattering geometries, for the inspection and characterization of roadways. Nadir-looking B-scan corresponds to a low-complexity mode exploiting the direct return from the response, whereas side-looking configurations allow the utilization of angular and polarimetric diversity in order to analyze advanced features. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the ability of each configuration, independently of aspects related to operational implementation, to discriminate and localize shallow underground defects in the wearing course of roadways, and to estimate key geophysical parameters, such as roughness and dielectric permittivity.

Determining outline, volume and effusion rate during an effusive volcanic eruption is crucial as it is a major controlling factor of the lava flow lengths, the prospective duration and hence the associated hazards. We present for the first time a multi-sensor thermal-and-topographic satellite data analysis for estimating lava effusion rates and volume. At the 2021 lava field of Cumbre Vieja, La Palma, we combine VIIRS + MODIS thermal data-based effusion rate estimates with DSMs analysis derived from optical tri-stereo Pléiades and TanDEM-X bi-static SAR-data.

Arc array synthetic aperture radar (AA-SAR), which can observe the scene in all directions, breaks through the single view of traditional SAR. However, the concealment of AA-SAR is poor. To mitigate this, arc array bistatic SAR (AA-BiSAR) with the moving transmitter is proposed, it has the advantages of good concealment and can expand the imaging scene, and improve the flexibility of the system.
