The phenolic profiles, antioxidant activity, antiproliferative property and the underlying molecular mechanisms of cell apoptosis of free phenolic (RFE) were analyzed in this work. Overall, rhizome phenolic extract (RE) contained rhizome free phenolic extract (RFE) and rhizome bound phenolic extract (RBE). Compared with RBE, RFE contained higher phenolic contents and possessed stronger antioxidant activity. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) results demonstrated that the main phenolics of were epigallocatechin (EGC), epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), gallic acid (GA) and catechin. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis found that L. was rich in volatile phytochemicals. In addition, many types of vitamin E and a few kinds of carotenoids were found in . In addition, the main compounds in RFE (GA, EGC, EGCG) and RFE all exhibited excellent antiproliferative activity, indicating the antiproliferative activity of RFE was partly attributed to the synergy effects of the main compounds. Further study confirmed that RFE could block 16.99% of HepG2 cells at S phase and induce 20.32% programmed cell death compared with the control group. Specifically, RFE dose-dependently induced cell apoptosis and cell cycle arrest via modulating the p53 signaling pathway including up-regulation of the expression of p53 and Bax while down-regulation of the Bcl-2, cyclin D1 and CDK4 levels. Therefore, RFE exhibited the potential of being developed as an auxiliary antioxidant and a therapeutic agent for cancer.

Unlabelled: The potential of (), an underutilized plant rich in medicinal and nutritional value, for producing ready-to-serve (RTS) beverages was explored. The research investigated commercial processing techniques for extracting fruit juice and the impact of stabilizers such as pectin (low and high), xanthan gum, and sodium alginate on beverage quality. Sodium alginate, chosen for its sedimentation rate and sensory acceptability, was further optimized in RTS formulations.

Low Molecular Weight Biobased Aromatics from Pyrolysis Liquids Using Zeolites: Yield Improvements by Using Pyrolysis Oil Fractions.

ACS Omega

January 2025

Green Chemical Reaction Engineering, Engineering and Technology Institute Groningen, University of Groningen, Nijenborgh 4, 9747 AG Groningen, The Netherlands.

Pyrolysis liquids from lignocellulosic biomass have the potential to be used as a feed for aromatics such as benzene, toluene, and xylenes (BTX) using catalytic upgrading with zeolites. We here report an experimental study on the conversion of various pyrolysis oil fractions to determine the most suitable one for BTX synthesis. For this purpose, the pyrolysis liquid was fractionated using several extraction/distillation steps to give four fractions with different chemical compositions.

UPLC-MS metabolite profiling and antioxidant activity of extract.

PeerJ

January 2025

Cancer Institute of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Zhejiang Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Tongde Hospital of Zhejiang Province, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China.

Background: The objective of the present study is to examine the total phenolic and flavonoid content of an ethanol extract of and to evaluate its phytochemical properties, antioxidant activity, and capacity to protect DNA from damage. This pharmaceutical/food resource mushroom may serve as a novel substitute functional food for health-conscious consumers, given its promising source of phenolics and flavonoids.

Methods: ethanol extract (SEE) was evaluated for total phenolic and flavonoid contents, while UPLC-MS analysis was used for terpenoids, phenylpropanoid, flavonoids, steroidal, phenols identification, and function prediction.

brown seaweed () is reported to exhibit several biological activities that promote human health, but it does not have the ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions, such as high temperatures and oxygen exposure. Encapsulation of extraction through different techniques is known to, optimize physicochemical properties, biological activities, maintain stability, and is an effective way to improve the shelf life of different foods. In the present study, the encapsulation of SIE was carried out by the freeze-drying method using maltodextrin, whey protein isolate (WPI), and chitosan.
