AI Article Synopsis

  • * The research, conducted at 10 sites, found a 16% lower risk of rCDI in the 2018 cohort compared to 2013.
  • * The statistically significant result (p < 0.0001) suggests improvements in managing or preventing CDI recurrence over the five-year period.

Article Abstract

Among persons with an initial infection (CDI) across 10 US sites in 2018 compared with 2013, 18.3% versus 21.1% had ≥1 recurrent CDI (rCDI) within 180 days. We observed a 16% lower adjusted risk of rCDI in 2018 versus 2013 ( < .0001).

Introduction: Silver sulfadiazine 1 % cream had historically been the mainstay initial treatment for scald wounds at our institution. However, we transitioned to using closed dressings of only petrolatum-impregnated 3 % bismuth tribromophenate gauze (Xeroform) for all partial-thickness burns. Xeroform adheres to the wound while allowing the exudates to drain and acts as a scaffold for re-epithelialization, after which it falls off without traumatizing the wound bed, theoretically allowing viable tissue to declare itself while requiring less frequent dressing changes.

Methods: We collected patients with CM between 1983 and 2018 from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database.

Outcomes for Younger Patients with Femoral Neck Fractures.

J Bone Joint Surg Am

December 2024

Edinburgh Orthopaedics, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland.

Background: There is a paucity of longer-term outcome data in younger adult patients who undergo fixation for an intracapsular hip fracture. The aims of this study were to evaluate the outcomes for young adult patients undergoing intracapsular hip fracture fixation and to assess factors associated with failure and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).

Methods: From 2008 to 2018, 112 consecutive patients ≤60 years of age (mean age, 48 years [range, 20 to 60 years]; 54% male) were retrospectively identified as having undergone fixation of an intracapsular hip fracture.

Effectiveness and Safety of Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 Inhibitor Continuation in Patients With Type 2 Diabetes and Late-Stage Chronic Kidney Disease.

J Pharm Technol

December 2024

Division of Outcomes and Practice Advancement, Department of Pharmacy Practice, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University at Buffalo, Buffalo, NY, USA.

Expansion of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor (SGLT2i) use in chronic kidney disease (CKD) prompted a pragmatic study of their safety and effectiveness in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and late-stage CKD. The primary clinical endpoint was change in HbA. Secondary clinical endpoints included change in body weight and blood pressure.

The purpose of this study was to conduct a conceptual replication of Pendergast et al.'s (2018) study that examined the diagnostic accuracy of a nomogram procedure, also known as a naive Bayesian approach. The specific naive Bayesian approach combined academic and social-emotional and behavioral (SEB) screening data to predict student performance on a state end-of-year achievement test.
