The phytohormone auxin triggers transcriptional reprogramming through a well-characterized perception machinery in the nucleus. By contrast, mechanisms that underlie fast effects of auxin, such as the regulation of ion fluxes, rapid phosphorylation of proteins or auxin feedback on its transport, remain unclear. Whether auxin-binding protein 1 (ABP1) is an auxin receptor has been a source of debate for decades. Here we show that a fraction of Arabidopsis thaliana ABP1 is secreted and binds auxin specifically at an acidic pH that is typical of the apoplast. ABP1 and its plasma-membrane-localized partner, transmembrane kinase 1 (TMK1), are required for the auxin-induced ultrafast global phospho-response and for downstream processes that include the activation of H-ATPase and accelerated cytoplasmic streaming. abp1 and tmk mutants cannot establish auxin-transporting channels and show defective auxin-induced vasculature formation and regeneration. An ABP1(M2X) variant that lacks the capacity to bind auxin is unable to complement these defects in abp1 mutants. These data indicate that ABP1 is the auxin receptor for TMK1-based cell-surface signalling, which mediates the global phospho-response and auxin canalization.

Microbial biotechnology employs techniques that rely on the natural interactions that occur in ecosystems. Bacteria, including rhizobacteria, play an important role in plant growth, providing crops with an alternative that can mitigate the negative effects of abiotic stress, such as those caused by saline environments, and increase the excessive use of chemical fertilizers. The present study examined the promoting potential of bacterial isolates obtained from the rhizospheric soil and roots of the Asparagus officinalis cultivar UF-157 F2 in Viru, la Libertad, Peru.

Phenotypic Plasticity of Grain Size-Related Traits in Main-Crop and Ratoon Rice.

Plant Cell Environ

January 2025

Department of Crop Genetics and Breeding, College of Plant Science and Technology, Huazhong Agricultural University, Wuhan, China.

Grain size and weight of main-crop are larger than those of ratoon rice, indicating that increasing grain size and weight of ratoon rice is an effective way to increase rice yield. Thus, grain length (GL), grain width (GW), and thousand-grain weight (TGW) of main-crop and ratoon rice in 159 indica rice accessions were used to associate with 2 017 495 SNP markers to detect quantitative trait nucleotides (QTNs) and their interactions with meteorological factors (QMIs), such as temperature and sunlight hours. Around 59 QMIs identified for temperature and 80 QMIs identified for sunlight hours, first, candidate gene LOC_Os02g40840 for GW and LOC_Os04g45480 for TGW were found to interact with temperature, while LOC_Os01g19970 for GL, LOC_Os02g39360 and LOC_Os07g05720 for GW, and LOC_Os07g49460 for TGW were found to interact with sunlight hours.

Auxin treatment reduces inflorescences number and delays bud development in the alternate bearing Citrus cultivar Murcott mandarin.

Tree Physiol

January 2025

Department of Fruit Tree Sciences, The Institute of Plant Sciences, Agricultural Research Organization, The Volcani Center, Rishon LeZion, Israel.

Specific cultivars of many commercial fruit tree undergo cycles of heavy fruit load (ON-crop) one year, followed by low fruit load (OFF-crop) the next (termed alternate bearing). Fruit load may affect flowering at various developmental stages, and its presence is suggested to generate a flowering-inhibitory signal. In a previous report, we showed that the presence of fruit induces polar auxin transport from the fruit into the stem, interfering with indole acetic acid (IAA) release from the bud, and thus elevating its levels in the bud meristem.

Auxin fluctuation and PIN polarization in moss leaf cell reprogramming.

Plant Cell Physiol

Graduate Institute of Biochemistry, National Chung Hsing University, No. 145, Xingda Rd., South Dist., Taichung 40227, Taiwan, R.O.C.

Auxin and its PIN-FORMED (PIN) exporters are essential for tissue repair and regeneration in flowering plants. To gain insight into the evolution of this mechanism, we investigated their roles in leaves excised from Physcomitrium patens, a bryophyte known for its remarkable cell reprogramming capacity. We used various approaches to manipulate auxin levels, including exogenous application, pharmacological manipulations, and auxin biosynthesis mutants.

Since plant viruses cause lifelong infections, virus-plant interactions are exposed to large temperature fluctuations in evergreen perennials. In such circumstances, virus-plant interactions are expected to change significantly between the warm and cold seasons. However, few studies have investigated the effects of cold temperatures on virus-plant interactions.
