AI Article Synopsis

  • This study explores the characteristics of biocomposites made from epoxy resin and fique, a plant native to South America.
  • The research shows that adding fique materials to the epoxy resin enhances thermal stability and modifies the structure, while oriented fiber arrangements significantly improve mechanical properties like tensile and flexural strength.
  • The findings suggest potential applications for these biocomposites in the automotive industry and highlight opportunities to reduce waste from fique processing.

Article Abstract

This work examines the morphology, mechanical and thermal properties of biocomposites based on epoxy resin-EP and fique (Furcraea andina), a native crop of South America. The EP-fique biocomposites were prepared using fique powder-FP an industrial waste generated during fique processing, nonwoven fique fiber mats-NWF and unidirectional fique fiber mats-UF oriented at 0° and 90°. The addition of fique into EP matrix restricts EP macromolecule chains movement and enhance the thermal stability of EP. SEM images showed that fique form used (powder or fiber) and mat arrangement can generate changes in the biocomposites morphology. Mechanical characterization show that fique powder and fique fibers oriented at 90° acts as fillers for the epoxy matrix while the fique fibers oriented at 0° reinforce EP matrix increasing the tensile and flexural modulus up to 5700 and 1100% respectively and tensile and flexural strength up to 277% and 820% in comparison with neat EP. The obtained results can increase the interest in researching and developing products from fique Powders and other natural fibers processing byproducts thus reducing the abundance of waste in soil and landfills and environmental concerns and suggest that the EP-fique biocomposites are promising to be used in the automotive sector.

Parabens are a family of p-hydroxybenzoic acid esters used as preservatives in food, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals products, parabens are pollutants that have been detected in the environment at low concentrations. Recent research describes that parabens can cause health alterations. Alternatives for contaminant removal include the adsorption process, which can use materials that are abundant, inexpensive and susceptible to modifications.

Biopolymers used to mitigate the environmental impact needed establish biodegradation percentage. The thermal and structural changes of two plastic materials, a flexible film based on cassava starch - Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and a semi-rigid cassava flour-stay cellulose fique fiber, were evaluated biodegradation under ISO 4855-1 standard. The tests were carried out for four weeks at constant temperature and flow of 58 °C ± 2 °C and 250 mL/h, using a mature compost as inoculum.

The HIV/AIDS epidemic remains a persistent and real issue, especially in key populations such as men who have sex with men (MSM), travestis and transgender persons. Projects for expanding rapid HIV testing are strategic initiatives aimed at the earliest possible identification of individuals' serological status and thus early treatment, screening of sex partners, and upscaling of preventive actions to interrupt the transmission chain. This study thus maps, describes, and systematizes the projects for expanding rapid HIV testing implemented from 2004 to 2021 in Brazil, highlighting the on-going contribution of civil society organizations and discussing the interoperability and cooperation resulting from public governance processes.

Using biopolymers functionalized with antibacterial agents to manufacture active packaging is a clean alternative to mitigate food losses due to postharvest plant diseases. In this study, two mycosynthetized AgNPs impregnation methodologies on cotton (cationization and biochemical reduction) were used to obtain the antibacterial fibers (A-AgNPs-C and A-AgNPs-IBR), which, in addition to being characterized by SEM-EDX, XRD, were evaluated as antibacterial materials. The cotton fibers showed growth inhibition of at 48 h.
