A novel sulfur-oxidizing bacterium, strain Am19, was isolated from sediment of a brackish lake. Strain Am19 grew chemolithoautotrophically on inorganic sulfur compounds, and heterotrophic growth was not observed. Cells were rod-shaped with length of 1.1-3.0 μm and diameter of 0.5-0.8 μm. Growth was observed at 5-37 °C with an optimum growth temperature of 30 °C. The pH range for growth was 5.6-8.5 with an optimum pH of 6.6-7.0. Major fatty acids were summed feature 3 (Cω7c and/or Cω6c), summed feature 8 (Cω7c and/or Cω6c) and C. The sole respiratory quinone was ubiquinone-8. The complete genome of strain Am19 is composed of a circular chromosome with length of 2.5 Mbp and G + C content of 42.7 mol%. Phylogenetic analysis based on genomic data indicated that strain Am19 belongs to the genus Thiomicrorhabdus but is distinct from any existing species. Analysis of the 16S rRNA gene supported creation of a new species to accommodate strain Am19. On the basis of genomic and phenotypic characteristics, strain Am19 (= NBRC 114602 = BCRC 81336) is proposed as the type strain of a new species, with name of Thiomicrorhabdus immobilis sp. nov.

Dinoflagellates of the genus can produce a variety of polyketides, such as amphidinols (AMs), amphidinoketides, and amphidinin, that have hemolytic, cytotoxic, and fish mortality properties. AMs pose a significant threat to ecological function due to their membrane-disrupting and permeabilizing properties, as well as their hydrophobicity. Our research aims to investigate the disparate distribution of AMs between intracellular and extracellular environments, as well as the threat that AMs pose to aquatic organisms.

Background: The aim of present study was to assess left ventricular (LV) myocardial deformation and changes over time in patients with acute myocarditis (AM) with preserved ejection fraction detected by late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) magnetic resonance imaging.

Methods: Thirty-five male patients with AM diagnoses and preserved systolic function based on cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were prospectively enrolled. On admission, echocardiography with measurements of global and segmental longitudinal (LS) strains was performed both at the endocardial (ENDO) and epicardial (EPI) levels.

In an effort to define the mechanism by which thyroid hormone increases the synthesis of hepatic cholesterol, we have investigated both in hypophysectomized and methimazole-treated hypothyroid rats the time course of T3 effects on plasma cholesterol concentration, total hepatic cholesterol, the rate of biliary secretion of cholesterol, bile acids, and phospholipids, and the activity and mRNA levels of 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme-A (HMG-CoA) reductase, the rate-limiting enzyme in the hepatic synthesis of cholesterol. A single dose of 200 micrograms T3 was estimated to maintain at least 90% nuclear occupancy for the ensuing 54 h of the experiment. In both preparations the relative rise in biliary secretion of cholesterol exceeded that of other biliary constituents and preceded by 12 h an increase in HMG-CoA reductase enzyme activity and its mRNA.

In contrast to the rapid response of mRNA-S14 which occurs within 20 min after L-triiodothyronine (T3) administration, the induction of other rat hepatic mRNA sequences exhibits a lag time of several hours. We have studied the induction of mRNA-S11 which codes for a protein of pI 6.1 and an Mr of 22,500 as a model of such a slowly responsive gene.
