Microbial electro- and photoelectrochemical CO reduction represents an opportunity to tackle the environmental demand for sustainable fuel production. Nanomaterials critically impact the electricity- and solar-driven microbial CO reduction processes. This minireview comprehensively summarizes the recent developments in the configuration and design of nanomaterials for enhancement of the bacterial adhesion and extracellular electron transfer (EET) processes, based on the modification technologies of improving chemical stability, electrochemical conductivity, biocompatibility, and surface area. Furthermore, the investigation of incorporating non-photosynthetic microorganisms using advanced light-harvesting nanostructured photoelectrodes for solar-to-chemical conversion, as well as the current understanding of EET mechanisms occurring at photosynthetic semiconductor nanomaterials-bacteria biohybrid interface is detailed. The crucial factors influencing the performance of microbial CO reduction systems and future perspectives are discussed to provide guidance for the realization of their large-scale application.

Background: Early life infections (ELIs), encompassing both viral and bacterial types, occur within the first six months of life. Influenced by genetic host factors and environmental conditions, the relationship between ELIs and subsequent allergic manifestations, particularly cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) and atopic dermatitis (AD), is complex and not fully understood.

Objective: The aim of the current study was to examine the potential interplay between nutrition, infections, and allergic manifestations in the first six months of life in infants with a family history of allergies, who were either exclusively breastfed (EBF) or fed a combination of breast milk and standard (SF) or partially hydrolyzed infant formula (pHF).

Advances in antimicrobial techniques to reduce postharvest loss of fresh fruit by microbial reduction.

NPJ Sustain Agric

December 2024

Bioproducts Discovery and Development Centre, Department of Plant Agriculture, Crop Science Building, University of Guelph, 50 Stone Road East, Guelph, ON Canada.

This review will provide new ideas for preserving fruits and decreasing fruit waste. This review outlines and evaluates research concerning postharvest fruit preservation employing antimicrobial strategies, which involve the integration of biological control alongside physical or chemical methods. The concurrent deployment of two or three of these techniques, particularly biological approaches, has demonstrated enhanced and synergistic antimicrobial outcomes in practical scenarios.

A cross-cohort study identifies potential oral microbial markers for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma.

iScience

December 2024

Tianjin Key Laboratory of Radiation Medicine and Molecular Nuclear Medicine, Institute of Radiation Medicine, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College, Tianjin 300192, China.

Current screening methods for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) face challenges such as low patient compliance and high costs. This study aimed to develop a model based on oral microbiome data for identifying ESCC. By analyzing 249 oral flora samples, we identified microbial markers associated with ESCC and constructed random forest classifiers that distinguished patients with ESCC from controls, achieving an area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.

Background: The vehicle in a local drug delivery (LDD) system plays a vital role in delivering the active drug component at the diseased site. Liquid/injectable platelet-rich fibrin (i-PRF), an autologous fibrin matrix, might be used as a vehicle to enmesh drugs and deliver locally at the periodontally diseased sites. This study evaluated the efficacy of the drug (ciprofloxacin [Cip])-loaded i-PRF as a LDD system adjunct to subgingival debridement in subjects with periodontal pockets.
