The construction of N-heterocyclic compounds from lignin remains a great challenge due to the complex lignin structure and the involvement of multiple steps, including the cleavage of lignin C-O linkages and the formation of heterocyclic aromatic rings. Herein, the first example of KOH mediated sustainable synthesis of quinoxaline derivatives from lignin β-O-4 model compounds in a one-pot fashion under transition-metal-free conditions has been achieved. Mechanistic studies suggested that this transformation includes highly coupled cascade steps of cleavage of C-O bonds, dehydrative condensation, sp C-H bond oxidative activation, and intramolecular dehydrative coupling reaction. With this protocol, a wide range of functionalized quinoxalines, including an important drug compound AG1295, were synthesized from lignin β-O-4 model compounds and β-O-4 polymer, showcasing the application potential of lignin in pharmaceutical synthesis.

Catalytic depolymerization is a favorable option for the valorization of industrial lignin. In this study, a new strategy was demonstrated for the efficient reductive depolymerization of industrial lignin based on a complex solvent of choline chloride-lactic acid (ChCl-LA) DES integrated with ethanol and a C-supported N-doped niobium-based catalyst with industrial lignin as carbon source (NBC@N-LC). It was found that the introduction of ethanol significantly improved the conversion of industrial lignin in ChCl-LA.

A new type of filler was added to epoxy resin to prepare a composite coating with excellent corrosion and weathering resistance. The simple synthesis process and nonpolluting raw materials of this filler contribute to the development of green chemistry. Specifically, lignin was encapsulated in mesoporous silica, the synergistic effect between the two resulted in the formation of lignin/mesoporous silica composite particles (MSN-L) with excellent ultraviolet (UV) resistance.

Dioxane lignin (DL) is isolated from plant material under mild acidolysis conditions and is widely used in many studies as a representative sample of protolignin, an alternative to milled wood lignin (MWL). However, the structural changes caused by hydrolytic degradation reactions during DL extraction are still poorly understood. In this work, an integrated approach based on 2D NMR and high-resolution mass spectrometry was used to establish the features of the lignin structure on the example of pine lignin isolated using dioxane under various conditions: MWL, DL and "formaldehyde stabilized" lignin (LSF).

Porous carbons with large surface area (>3000 m/g) and heteroatom dopants have shown great promise as electrode materials for zinc ion hybrid capacitors. Centralized mesopores are effective to accelerate kinetics, and edge nitrogen can efficiently enhance pseudocapacitive capability. It is a great challenge to engineer centralized mesopores and edge nitrogen in large-surface-area porous carbons.

Domestic laundry wastewater is a major contributor to microfiber emissions in the aquatic environment. Among several mitigation measures, the use of external filters to capture microfibers from wastewater is one of the most efficient and commercially viable methods. This study attempted to develop an eco-friendly filtration medium to filter microfibers in laundry wastewater using luffa cylindrica fibers.
