Current theories of oculomotor control in reading differ in their accounts of saccadic targeting. Some argue that targets for saccades are solely selected on the basis of the rapidly changing sensory input, whereas others additionally allow for the reader's experiential biases to modulate saccade lengths. We investigated this debate using cross-linguistic data on text reading in 12 alphabetic languages from the Multilingual Eye-Movement Corpus (MECO) database. These languages vary widely in their word length distributions, suggesting that expected word lengths and corresponding biases toward optimal saccade lengths may also vary across readers of these languages. Regression analyses confirmed that readers of languages with longer words (e.g., Finnish) rather than shorter words (e.g., Hebrew) landed further into the word, even when sensory aspects relevant for saccade planning (e.g., word lengths) were controlled for. In the prevalent saccade type, a one-letter difference in mean word length between languages came with one-quarter-letter of a difference in initial landing position and saccade length, and a decrease in 1.5% in refixation probability. Interpreted in the Bayesian framework, the findings highlight the relevance of global language-wide settings for accounts of spatial oculomotor control and lead to testable predictions for further cross-linguistic research. Aspirin may be necessary for some patients with cardiovascular disease, but previous studies on the use and dosage of aspirin and the association with hypertension have been inadequate. The results of existing studies have been somewhat inconsistent. Our study was designed to assess the association between prophylactic aspirin use and hypertension in U.

Disruptions in cognitive function have been reported in individuals undergoing haemodialysis and those with chronic kidney disease. This pilot study protocol primarily assesses the feasibility and acceptability of using mobile cognitive gaming apps for patient-led cognitive training during haemodialysis sessions. The protocol consists of three phases: (1) reviewing and evaluating available cognitive gaming apps, (2) conducting focus groups/interviews with people with kidney disease to determine app preferences, and (3) undertaking a quasi-experimental randomised controlled trial to compare cognitive outcomes between a patient-led app intervention group and a standard care control group over four months.

Unlabelled: enterica serotype Reading has recently been identified as a significant foodborne pathogen from contaminated poultry products. There is a critical need for close monitoring of this newly emerged pathogen. This study developed bioluminescent strains of Reading for real-time pathogen tracking using bioluminescence imaging.

Background: Maintaining a healthy diet during pregnancy is vital for reducing the risk of adverse birth outcomes. However, conventional methods of assessing the dietary behavior of pregnant women, such as the FFQ, are often time-consuming. This study aims to develop a concise nutritional screening questionnaire tailored for pregnant women, empowering prenatal healthcare providers to quickly identify key adverse dietary behaviors and provide targeted guidance.

Biochar has been proposed as an effective material for mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from farmlands, but comparable information for earthen aquaculture ponds is limited. A field study was conducted to investigate the effects of adding biochar (200-1600 kg ha) derived from the invasive plant Spartina alterniflora on sediment physico-chemical properties, CH production potential (P), and the relevant functional gene abundances in earthen aquaculture ponds during the non-farming period. The results indicated that biochar treatments increased sediment porosity and salinity, while decreasing dissolved organic carbon and microbial biomass carbon.
