Racial Discrimination-related Interoceptive Network Disruptions: A Pathway to Disconnection.

Biol Psychiatry Cogn Neurosci Neuroimaging

December 2024

Emory University School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Electronic address:

Background: Racial discrimination (RD) disrupts regulatory systems in minoritized individuals, particularly those that govern attention, including attention to visceral signals (interoception). RD frequency is linked to physiological "shut down" responses, characterized clinically by dissociation. We examined associations between RD frequency and functional connectivity of attention and interoceptive networks in sample of trauma-exposed Black women, investigating how connectivity alterations associate with dissociation severity.

Preeclampsia is one of the leading causes of maternal morbidity, with consequences during and after pregnancy. Because of its diverse clinical presentation, preeclampsia is an adverse pregnancy outcome that is uniquely challenging to predict and manage. In this paper, we developed racial bias-free machine learning models that predict the onset of preeclampsia with severe features or eclampsia at discrete time points in a nulliparous pregnant study cohort.

Increasing diversity among future clinicians and physician-scientists has been identified as a key strategy for addressing and correcting health disparities among underrepresented populations. Increasingly, medical schools, the institutions that train clinicians, have embraced the practice of holistic review for evaluating applicants and virtually all medical schools have reported contributing to a diverse physician workforce as an important aspect of their educational mission.

Experiments with fully crossed designs are often used in experimental psychology spanning several fields, from cognitive psychology to social cognition. These experiments consist in the presentation of stimuli representing super-ordinate categories, which have to be sorted into the correct category in two contrasting conditions. This tutorial presents a linear mixed-effects model approach for obtaining Rasch-like parameterizations of response times and accuracies of fully crossed design data.
