The Lithium sulfur (Li-S) battery has a great potential to replace lithium-ion batteries due to its high-energy density. However, the "shuttle effect" of polysulfide intermediates (LiS, LiS, LiS, etc.) from the cathode can lead to rapid capacity decay and low coulombic efficiency, thus limiting its further development. Anchoring polysulfide and inhibiting polysulfide migration in electrolytes is one of the focuses in Li-S battery. It is well known that polar metal oxides-manganese oxides (MnO) are normally used as an effective inhibitor for its polysulfide inhibiting properties. Considering the natural 1D tunnel structure, MnO with three kinds of typical tunnel-type were screened to study the effects of the tunnel size on the adsorption capacity of polysulfide. We found that MnO with larger tunnel sizes has stronger chemisorption capacity of polysulfide. It promotes the conversion of polysulfide, and corresponding cathode exhibits better cycle reliability and rate performance in the cell comparison tests. This work should point out a new strategy for the cathode design of advanced Li-S battery by controlling the tunnel size.

Silicon (Si) is considered a promising anode material for next-generation lithium-ion batteries due to its high theoretical specific capacity and earth-abundancy. However, challenges such as significant volume expansion, unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation in incompatible electrolytes, and slow lithium-ion transport lead to its poor cycling and rate performance. In this work, it is demonstrated that superior cyclability and rate capability of Si anodes can be achieved using ethyl fluoroacetate (EFA) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) solvents with low binding energy with Li but with sufficiently high relative dielectric constants.

Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries hold significant promise due to high energy density, cost-effectiveness, and ecological sustainability, but their practical applications are constrained by suboptimal electrochemical performance and the detrimental shuttle effect. Herein, a porous, sandwich-structured composite was developed to function as a freestanding cathode designed for Li-S batteries without aluminum foil. Porous carbon nanofibers (PCNF) were employed as the conductive matrix for sulfur, with tungsten carbide (WC) being incorporated to furnish abundant active sites for polysulfide adsorption.

The shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides and non-ideal reaction kinetics restrict the development of high-energy-density lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Here, we report a graphene quantum dot (GQD)-modified CoO/NiCoO yolk-shell polyhedron as a sulfur host for Li-S batteries. GQDs shorten transport pathways of electrons, while strong binding of CoO and NiCoO to LiS, LiS and LiS are demonstrated from density functional theory calculations.
