In this investigation, 1060Al/AZ31B welded joints were obtained by magnetic pulse welding technique. In order to test the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints, the welded joints were annealed at different temperatures and then examined by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy spectrum analysis (EDS) and mechanical properties testing. The testing results of the welded joints annealed at different temperatures showed that the Al-Mg MPW welded joints were well bonded. The changing of the microstructure and mechanical properties of Al/Mg welded joints was not apparent under the temperature of 200 °C. However, AlMg intermetallic compound layer formed at 200 °C. AlMg and AlMg intermetallic compound layers formed at the temperature of 300 °C. The diffusion rate of Mg and Al elements is proportional to the annealing temperature and the intermetallic compounds layer is gradually formed. The microhardness near the interface decreased first and then increased on account of the brittleness of intermetallic compounds. In the tensile shear tests, the fracture mechanism of Al/Mg MPW welded joints were analyzed. When the temperature was lower than 200 °C the joints did not crack. At 200 °C and 250 °C, the joints fracture along the AlMg-Al interface. The joint cracks along the interface of AlMg-AlMg at the temperature of 300 °C.

TC17 titanium alloy is widely used in the aviation industry for dual-performance blades, and linear friction welding (LFW) is a key technology for its manufacturing and repair. However, accurate evaluation of the mechanical properties of TC17-LFW joints and research on their joint fracture behavior are still not clear. Therefore, this paper used the finite element numerical simulation method (FEM) to investigate the mechanical behavior of the TC17-LFW joint with a complex micro-structure during the tensile processing, and predicted its mechanical properties and fracture behavior.

Design, Development, and Testing of Machine Learning Models to Estimate Properties of Friction Stir Welded Joints.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology, College of Applied Industrial Technology, Jazan University, Jazan 45142, Saudi Arabia.

This paper estimates friction stir welded joints' ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and hardness using six supervised machine learning models (viz., linear regression, support vector regression, decision tree regression, random forest regression, K-nearest neighbour, and artificial neural network). Tool traverse speed, tool rotational speed, pin diameter, shoulder diameter, tool offset, and tool tilt are the six input parameters in the 200 datasets for training and testing the models.

Development of Application Customization Toolkit (ACT) for 3D Thermal Elastic-Plastic Welding Analysis.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, College of Engineering, Seoul National University, Seoul 08826, Republic of Korea.

A 3D thermal elastic-plastic welding analysis ACT (Application Customization Toolkit) was developed in ANSYS, making welding analysis more accessible. The welding analysis was performed using a decoupled method, separated into thermal and structural analyses. To validate the results, comparisons were made with previous studies for two types of welding: T-joint fillet welding and butt welding.

In the study of structural materials, the analysis of fracture and deformation resistance plays an important role, particularly in materials widely used in the construction industry, such as poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). PVC is a popular material used, among others, in the manufacture of window profiles, doors, pipes, and many other structural components. The aim of this research was to define the influence of the degree of milling of the glass-fibre-reinforced composite on the strength of the window frame welds, and in the next step, to propose new welding parameters to obtain sufficient strength properties that allow reducing the cost of the technological welding operation.

Liquid Metal Embrittlement Susceptibility and Crack Formation of the Zn-Coated Complex Phase Steel.

Materials (Basel)

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Advanced Special Steel, School of Materials Science and Engineering, Shanghai University, Shanghai 200444, China.

In the resistance spot-welding (RSW) of galvanized complex phase (CP) steel, liquid metal embrittlement (LME) may occur, deteriorating the welded joint's performance. Based on the Auto/Steel Partnership (A/SP) standard, the joints of galvanized CP steel welded with a welding current from 7.0 kA to 14.
