Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is defined as the acquisition by an organism of hereditary material from a phylogenetically unrelated organism. This process is mostly observed among bacteria and archaea, and considered less likely between microbes and multicellular eukaryotes. However, recent studies provide compelling evidence of the evolutionary importance of HGT in eukaryotes, driving functional innovation. Here, we study an HGT event in (Collembola, Hexapoda) of a carbohydrate-active enzyme homologous to glycosyl hydrase group 43 (GH43). The gene encodes an N-terminal signal peptide, targeting the product for excretion, which suggests that it contributes to the diversity of digestive capacities of the detritivore host. The predicted α-L-arabinofuranosidase shows high similarity to genes in two other Collembola, an insect and a tardigrade. The gene was cloned and expressed in using a cell-free protein expression system. The expressed protein showed activity against p-nitrophenyl-α-L-arabinofuranoside. Our work provides evidence for functional activity of an HGT gene in a soil-living detritivore, most likely from a bacterial donor, with genuine eukaryotic properties, such as a signal peptide. Co-evolution of metazoan GH43 genes with the Panarthropoda phylogeny suggests the HGT event took place early in the evolution of this ecdysozoan lineage.

() serves as a critical indicator microorganism for assessing the prevalence and dissemination of antibiotic resistance, notably harboring various antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs). Among these, the emergence of the gene represents a significant threat to public health, especially since carbapenem antibiotics are vital for treating severe infections caused by Gram-negative bacteria. This study aimed to characterize the antibiotic resistance features of -positive strains isolated from waterfowl in several regions of China and elucidate the dissemination patterns of the gene.

The prevalence of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in agricultural soils has garnered significant attention. However, the long-term impacts of various nitroge (N)-substitution fertilization regimes on the distribution of soil ARGs and their dominant drivers in a subtropical triple-cropping system remain largely unexplored. This study employed a metagenomic approach to analyze soil ARGs, microbial communities, mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and viruses from a maize-maize-cabbage rotation field experiment with five different fertilization regimes.

The pathogenicity islands (SaPIs), including SaPI1, are a type of MGEs are that carry a variable complement of genes encoding virulence factors. SaPI1 is mobilized at high frequency by "helper" bacteriophages, such as 80α, leading to packaging of the SaPI1 genome into virions made from structural proteins supplied by the helper.

Metazoan parasites have played a major role in shaping innate immunity in animals. Insect hosts and parasitoid wasps are excellent models for illuminating how animal innate immune systems have evolved to neutralize these enemies. One such strategy relies on symbioses between insects and intracellular bacteria that express phage-encoded toxins.
