Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) play an important role in the medical field due to their potent antimicrobial activity. This, together with the constant emergence of resistance to antimicrobial drugs, means AgNPs are often investigated as an alternative to solve this problem. In this article, we analyzed the antifungal and antiamoebic effects of a recently described type of AgNP, silver nanorings (AgNRs), and compared them with other types of AgNPs. Tests of the activity of AgNPs against various fungal and amoebic species were carried out. In all cases, AgNPs showed a high biocidal effect, although with fungi this depended on the species involved. Antifungal activity was detected by the conditioning of culture media or water but this effect was not dependent on the release of Ag ions. On the other hand, the proliferation of trophozoites was reduced by silver nanorings (AgNRs) and silver nanowires (AgNWs), with AgNWs being capable of totally inhibiting the germination of cysts. AgNRs constitute a new type of AgNP with an antifungal and antiacanthamoebic activity. These results open the door to new and effective antimicrobial therapies as an alternative to the use of antifungals or antiamoebic drugs, thus avoiding the constant appearance of resistance and the difficulty of eradicating infections.

We propose and demonstrate a data-driven plasmonic metascreen that efficiently absorbs incident light over a wide spectral range in an ultra-thin silicon film. By embedding a double-nanoring silver array within a 20 nm ultrathin amorphous silicon (a-Si) layer, we achieve a significant enhancement of light absorption. This enhancement arises from the interaction between the resonant cavity modes and localized plasmonic modes, requiring precise tuning of plasmon resonances to match the absorption region of the silicon active layer.

The current surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates typically feature a single energy level, posing challenges in coordinating electromagnetic enhancement (EM) and chemical enhancement (CM), thereby limiting the sensitive detection of numerous crucial target molecules. In this study, novel aggregated nanorings (a-NRs) hybridizing Ag, Au and AgCl are constructed as SERS substrates. On one hand, the obtained a-NRs exhibit robust localized surface plasmon resonance absorption, whose wavelength can be tuned to match three commonly used laser wavelengths (532, 633 and 785 nm) to gain strong EM effect.

Exploring the ability of four-stranded DNA nanorings (DNRs) to host multiple nanosilver clusters (NAgCs) for cooperatively amplifiable fluorescence biosensing to a specific initiator () is fascinating. By designing three DNA single strands and three analogous stem-loop hairpins, we developed a functional DNR through sequential cross-opening and overlapped hybridization. Note that a substrate strand (SS) was programmed with six modules: two severed splits (sT and sT') of NAgCs template, two sequestered segments by a middle unpaired spacer, and a partition for -recognizable displacement, while sT and sT' were also tethered in two ends of three hairpins.

With the expansion of the application of high-sensitivity Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique, micro SERS-active substrates with rich optical properties and high-level functions are desired. In this study, silver nanorings with nanoscale surface roughness were fabricated as a new type of enclosed quasi-2D micro-SERS-active substrate. Highly-crystalline spherical and hemispherical silver nanoprotrusions were densely and uniformly distributed over the entire surface of the nanorings.
