Poverty-like all life experiences-can change the developing brain. Psychopathology can, too. But how? And when? And why? And what happens to brain development when children face both poverty and pathology at the same time? With 1 in 5 children growing up poor in the United States today-each at higher risk for developing depression-answering these questions remains among public mental health's most important imperatives. Yet doing so is wickedly challenging: investigators must decipher a wide array of interacting social and biological processes.

This study examines the impact of positive and negative feedback on recall of past decisions, focusing on behavioral performance and electrophysiological (EEG) responses. Participants completed a decision-making task involving 10 real-life scenarios, each followed by immediate positive or negative feedback. In a recall phase, participants' accuracy (ACC), errors (ERRs), and response times (RTs) were recorded alongside EEG data to analyze brain activity patterns related to recall.

A strong repetitive stimulus can occasionally enhance axonal excitability, leading to the generation of afterdischarge. This afterdischarge outlasts the stimulus period and originates either from the physiological spike initiation site, typically the axon initial segment, or from ectopic sites for spike generation. One of the possible mechanisms underlying the stimulus-induced ectopic afterdischarge is the local depolarization due to accumulated potassium ions surrounding the axonal membranes of the distal portion.
