In this work, a novel amino-modified chitosan/tailings composite (CS-PEI-nGT) was successfully synthesized from gold tailings particle treated by ball milling (nGT), chitosan (CS) and polyethyleneimine (PEI) as raw materials, for Lead (Pb(Ⅱ)) and Cadmium (Cd(Ⅱ)) removal from aqueous solutions. The CS-PEI-nGT was characterized by using FTIR, XRD, SEM, BET, TGA and XPS techniques. The results showed that CS-PEI-nGT had maximum adsorption capacity of 192.78 mg·g and 99.46 mg·g for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) respectively at pH 5. The adsorption kinetics was described well by pseudo-second-order kinetic adsorption model, and suggested that chemisorption as the rate-controlling step for adsorption of Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ). The isotherm data was accurately explained by Langmuir model with higher correlation coefficient (R) of 0.9911 and 0.9642 for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ) respectively. In addition, CS-PEI-nGT retained its selective adsorption capacity for Pb(Ⅱ) and Cd(Ⅱ), compared to other metals such as Zn(Ⅱ), Mn(Ⅱ), Mg(Ⅱ) and Al(Ⅲ). The mechanism of the adsorption was investigated and the results revealed that amino (-NH), silicon oxide groups (Si-O) and hydroxyl (-OH) functional groups on composite surface were accountable for metals adsorption, suggesting surface complexation, electrostatic interactions and ion exchange. Our work presents a promising strategy for tailings recycling and highly efficient removal of toxic metals ions from wastewater.

An elevated level of endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is considered an aggravating factor for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). To develop an ER-stress attenuator that is effective against colitis, 4-phenylbutyric acid (4-PBA), a chemical chaperone that alleviates ER stress, was conjugated with acidic amino acids to yield 4-PBA-glutamic acid (PBA-GA) and 4-PBA-aspartic acid (PBA-AA) conjugates. The PBA derivatives were converted to 4-PBA in the cecal contents, and the conversion was greater with PBA-GA than that with PBA-AA.

Pb-Activated Amine-Assisted Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Reaction on Organic-Inorganic Perovskites.

We report here the reaction mechanism for explicit aqueous solvent quantum mechanics (QM) studies determining the energetics and reaction barriers for the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on CHNHPbI surface. We find that both the lead (Pb) atoms and the surface organic molecules play essential roles, leading to a two-step Pb-activated amine-assisted (PbAAA) reaction mechanism involving an intermediate lead hydride state. Both H of H product are extracted from surface organic molecules, while two protons from the solution migrate along water chains via the Grotthuss mechanism to replace the H in organic molecule.

Purpose: To evaluate the dosimetric accuracy of Pencil beam (PB), Anisotropic Analytical Algorithm (AAA) and Collapsed Cone Convolution Superposition (CCCS) in thoracic tumours for various IMRT techniques.

Methods: Step-and-shoot Linac IMRT (IMRT), arc volumetric RapidArc (RA) and Helical Tomotherapy (HT) lung treatments for different clinical situations (mediastinum tumour, single metastasis and multiple metastases) were simulated and calculated with PB/AAA, AAA, CCCS, respectively. Delivery quality assurance plans were first verified in homogeneous media (Cheese phantom and ArcCHECK); then several low-density inhomogeneous phantoms were used: the Multiplug ArcCHECK, the commercial ArcCHECK slightly modified with a low density lung-shape insert and a custom-made slab heterogeneous phantom simulating the thorax region.
