Published: August 2022

Adipose tissue plays a critical role in systemic metabolism. This work describes how perturbations in the adipocyte progenitor cell repertoire during the perinatal period exert long-lasting metabolic effects in adulthood.

The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of supplementary feeding with Chinese herbal mixtures on perinatal sows, focusing on their reproductive performance, immunity and breast milk quality. Sixty healthy pregnant sows (Large white, 4 parities) were randomly allocated into five treatment groups ( = 12 per group): the control group received a basal diet, the TRT1 group received a basal diet supplemented with 2 kg/t Bazhen powder (BZP), while the TRT2, TRT3, and TRT4 groups received a basal diet supplemented with 1 kg/t, 2 kg/t, and 3 kg/t Qi-Zhu-Gui-Shao soothing liver and replenishing blood powder (QZGSP), respectively. The trial lasted for a duration of 5 weeks, commencing from day 100 of gestation and concluding on day 21 postpartum.

Bisphenol S (BPS) is widely used as a substitute for Bisphenol A (BPA). While perinatal BPS exposure is suspected to increase susceptibility to high-caloric diet-induced adipogenesis, how BPS affects offspring remains largely unknown. This study explored effects of prenatal BPS exposure on adiposity and insulin resistance in high-fat diet (HFD)-fed C57BL/6 offspring, revealing significant changes in body weight, glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and histopathology.

Article Synopsis
  • Body composition assessment is crucial for managing health conditions like HIV, especially in resource-limited settings such as Africa.
  • Researchers tested methods like dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), bioelectrical impedance (BIA), and various anthropometric measures on 420 HIV-infected adolescents in Zambia.
  • While BIA and anthropometry provided some data, they were not reliable enough for tracking changes in body composition compared to DXA, with BIA potentially being useful for identifying general trends when DXA isn’t available.

Maternal organokines throughout pregnancy as predictors of neonatal anthropometric characteristics and adiposity.

Aims: To evaluate the relation between maternal concentrations of progranulin (PGRN), adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (AFABP), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) throughout pregnancy with neonatal weight and length at birth and at one month of age, as well as with the percentage of fat mass at one month of age. Besides, we evaluated the association between maternal organokine concentrations with pregestational nutritional status and gestational weight gain (GWG).

Methods: Longitudinal study of 100 healthy pregnant women and their neonates.

Background: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is one of the most prevalent complications associated with pregnancy, exhibiting a gradual rise in prevalence worldwide. Given the potential for numerous short- and long-term complications for both mother and child, patients diagnosed with GDM require individualised treatment to compensate for metabolic abnormalities and ultimately reduce the risk of the known adverse consequences of impaired glucose tolerance.

Methods And Results: The manuscript presents a summary of the current knowledge on changes in maternal metabolism during physiological pregnancy and pregnancy complicated by gestational diabetes.
