The regulation of photochemical properties of phototheranostics, especially the absorption, fluorescence, singlet oxygen (O) generation, and photothermal conversion efficiency, is a hot research topic. Here, we designed and synthesized four boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) derivatives with high absorption coefficients and intense fluorescence in the near-infrared (NIR) region. The substituted electron-donating group significantly improved O generation and fluorescence of BODIPYs, whereas the electron-withdrawing group boosts photothermal conversion. These hydrophobic BODIPYs were further coated with DSPE-PEG-2000 to form water dispersible nanoparticles (NPs). Among these BODIPY NPs, the B-OMe-NPs with methoxyl substituted at the meso-position showed the highest O generation, a photothermal conversion efficiency of 66.5%, and an NIR fluorescence peak at 809 nm. and experiments demonstrated that B-OMe-NPs might be used for NIR fluorescent and photoacoustic imaging-guided photodynamic and photothermal therapy of cancer.

Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is regarded as a green and sustainable strategy to address the global freshwater crisis. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to develop a photothermal structure with highly efficient evaporation under omnidirectional illumination. Herein, a three-dimensional multiscale pyramidal array photothermal structure (PAPS) was developed from the inspiration of durian skin.

To design a multifunctional nanozyme hydrogel with antibacterial, photo-responsive nitric oxide-releasing, and antioxidative properties for promoting the healing of infected wounds. We first developed ultra-small silver nanoparticles (NPs)-decorated sodium nitroprusside-doped Prussian blue (SNPB) NPs, referred to as SNPB@Ag NPs, which served as a multifunctional nanozyme. Subsequently, this nanozyme, together with geniposide (GE), was incorporated into a thermo-sensitive hydrogel, formulated from Poloxamer 407 and carboxymethyl chitosan, creating a novel antibacterial wound dressing designated as GE/SNPB@Ag hydrogel.

Currently, polymer actuators capable of photothermal response are being developed to be more sensitive and repeatable. In this work, a three-layered structured soft film actuator (NA/PET/NI-3) was designed by combining poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM), poly(N-(2-aminoethyl)-acrylamide) (PANGA) and poly(ethylene glycol-co-terephthalate) (PET) film. Coconut water and PEI were used to synthesize a new kind of carbon nanosheet (PEI-CCS), which, when triggered by near-infrared light, will enable photothermal bending behavior in the micrometer-scale NA/PET/NI-n film, while PET served as the supporting and heat conducting layer.
