The 3' untranslated region (3'UTR) is associated with mRNA stability because of its involvement in 3' end processing, polyadenylation, and mRNA capping. Mutations located in this area can cause a phenotype compatible with β-thalassemia (β-thal). We report a Chinese subject with β-thal intermedia (β-TI) who developed transfusion-dependent anemia. Molecular studies revealed that the patient was a compound heterozygote for two β-thal alleles: codons 41/42 (-TTCT) (: c.126_129delCTTT) and term codon +32 (A>C) (: c.*32A>C).

Background: Neural tube defects (NTDs) are defined as an incomplete closure of the neural tube (NT), with a prevalence of 1.2 per 1000 live births around the world. Methylation of the maternally imprinted gene Insulin-like growth factor 2 (IGF2) is one of the epigenetic mechanisms that contribute significantly to the development of NTDs.

Mutations in coding sequence and abnormal PKD1 expression levels contribute to the development of autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease, the most common genetic disorder. Regulation of PKD1 expression by factors located in the promoter and 3´ UTR have been extensively studied. Less is known about its regulation by 5´ UTR elements.

Background: Messenger RNA 3' untranslated regions (3'UTRs) control many aspects of gene expression and determine where the transcript will terminate. The polyadenylation signal (PAS) AAUAAA (AATAAA in DNA) is a key regulator of transcript termination and this hexamer, or a similar sequence, is very frequently found within 30 bp of 3'UTR ends. Short interspersed element (SINE) retrotransposons are found throughout genomes in high copy numbers.

Background: Epigenetic modifications have been proved to play important roles in the spinal degenerative diseases. As a type of noncoding RNA, the microRNA (miRNA) is a vital class of regulatory factor in the epigenetic modifications, while the role of miRNAs in the regulation of epigenetic modifications in ligamentum flavum hypertrophy (LFH) has not been fully investigated.
Methods: The miRNA sequencing analysis was used to explore the change of miRNA expression during the fibrosis of ligamentum flavum (LF) cells caused by the TGF-β1 (10 ng/ml).

Changes in critical sites of virus-encoded protein or cis-acting element generally determine pathogenicity differentiation among different isolates of the same plant virus. Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) isolates, which exhibit the most extensively known host range, demonstrate notable pathogenicity differentiation. This study focuses on the severe isolate CMV and mild isolate CMV, both affecting several species within the Solanaceae family, to identify the key factors regulating pathogenicity differentiation.
