AI Article Synopsis

  • A photoswitchable ligand using azobenzene forms a cage structure with palladium(II) ions, creating the complex [Pd(E-L)].
  • Irradiating the cage with 470 nm light converts it to a monomeric form [Pd(Z-L)], while 405 nm light or heat can revert it back to the original cage.
  • Self-assembly enhances the selectivity for the metastable isomer and significantly increases the thermal stability of the complex, extending its half-life from 40 days to 850 days.

Article Abstract

A photoswitchable ligand based on azobenzene is self-assembled with palladium(II) ions to form a [Pd (E-L) ] cage. Irradiation with 470 nm light results in the near-quantitative switching to a monomeric species [Pd(Z-L) ] , which can be reversed by irradiation with 405 nm light, or heat. The photoswitching selectivity towards the metastable isomer is significantly improved upon self-assembly, and the thermal half-life is extended from 40 days to 850 days, a promising approach for tuning photoswitching properties.
