In a double-blind study the effect of a high dosage of O-(beta-hydroxyethyl)-rutosides (HR) was tested in women taking oral contraceptives and suffering from venous insufficiency of the lower limbs. Ten patients were treated for 28 days with HR (3 g/day) and ten with a placebo. In basal conditions and after therapy, the symptoms of venous disorders and the venous function, by means of strain gauge plethysmography, was evaluated in both groups. The results showed an increase of venous capacitance and a reduction of venous tone in the subjects treated including those without symptoms in the lower limbs. The HR treatment resulted in a significant improvement of the venous function parameters and of the symptoms in lower limbs.

Systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a rare and life-threatening disorder characterized by acute hypotension, hypoalbuminemia, and hemoconcentration, which often results in severe respiratory complications, such as pulmonary edema. SCLS can be triggered by infections, including COVID-19, and is associated with a high mortality rate. Here, we report a case of COVID-19-associated SCLS in a 68-year-old man.

Myocardial bridging is a frequent anomaly of the heart in humans and other animals. A myocardial bridge is typically characterized by the systolic narrowing seen with traditional catheter angiography, but this abnormality is not by itself a sign of ischemia or the need for intervention. In particular, transient spontaneous angina must be corroborated by reproducible narrowing during acetylcholine testing; this narrowing occurs during resting conditions and is responsive to nitroglycerin administration.

In case of venous route abnormality during a leadless pacemaker (LP) implantation, it can be challenging if we still performed via the predesigned femoral vein. We report a patient with normal preoperative laboratory and image results, but azygos continuation of the inferior vena cava (IVC) was suspected during the procedure. Then, we decided to change the implantation strategy, the LP implantation was successfully performed via right jugular vein instead of the classical IVC route.

Background: Although extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is an effective technique for life support, the incidence of acute kidney injury (AKI) during ECMO support remains high. Dexmedetomidine (DEX), which has been widely used for sedation during ECMO, possesses several properties that help reduce the occurrence of AKI. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of DEX on kidney function during ECMO.
